Engine Making Knocking/Clacking sounds after oil change - HELP Please

06 Mastiff with 3400 miles. After changing the oil and oil filter with Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin oil (full synthetic), my bike is making some knocking and clacking sounds, which seems like it's coming from the V-Twin. Not sure what is going on. Wasn't making this noise prior to oil change. Could I have too much oil in the system? Filled to bottom of feeder neck, maybe a little above that, when I looked tonight.

I tried to make a little video, I know its still hard to listen/tell, but maybe it will help. You can hear me say "there it is", towards the end of the video to try to signify the "noise" about 1:07 seconds in.

Any help or insight from all the knowledgeable folks here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Many on here use the Mobil One synthetic oil and have not had any problems. Did you replace the filter with one made for this bike or are you using something else. You may want to use the non synthetic oil if that is what was in there before. I don't use synthetic on mine because of the high lift fast ramp cam I run along with the hydro-solid lifters. I use Lucas 50 wt, not a multi-grade just straight 50 and it works great being the Temperatures in this are run between 98 and 102 and higher at times. If it was not make that noise before go back the oil you had before and make sure you have the right filter.

TP Rocker boxes and wore out valve guides is what it sounds like or a outa adjustment pushrod from a lifter loosing prime speacially if you changed oil as lifters dont always do well with that.a lot of folks will disagree but you can run a Vtwin a hundred miles with no oil in the bottom end as it is an oil injection motor so I doubt its bottom end.

Could they be worn out already with only 3400 easy miles on the bike?

Thanks.

Could not really hear the distinct noise, however a few things to consider.

I have been using Mobil One for years and though it has been awhile, I do recall that when I switch, the engine got noisier than the old dino oil. Also with the TP Boxes on them, I understand TP Boxes allow more noise to be heard from the top end.

So since I cannot here anything distinctive on the video, to be on safe side, follow the recommendation that others have posted such as making sure tappet screen is clean, possibly check the vavle adjustment, etc.

If nothing else has changed other than the oil, more than likely it is like mine (and I think many others) and it just got louder valve train noise with the Mobil One.

I did have my top end changed over to S&S way back then and everything was changed but the Rocker Boxes themself (new springs, rollers, valves guides, valves, etc) and though the noise of the loose guides went away, the valve train was still very noisey. Put well over 20K on it since then with no issues and still plenty of power (even pulled the front end up yesterday when getting on it a little harder than normal-yes pucker factor in play when not expected).

Oh one other item, a few times if I had to much oil in it (I fill to the bottom of the tube or at most no more than a inch or two above the bottom), and when I get on it. it will puke some oil out the vent into the air cleaner.

When It occurs I have seen droppletts on my valve cover, normally the left side rear on that made me think I had a leaking cover. Once I wiped it off once-twic at the most, never showed back up. I found that it would spit out some and get in the cleaner and then the vapor would seep over to the valve cover and around to the left rear and show small drops.

Moral was to not overfill and take it easy for the first few miles after a change until she leveled out.

mine is making a little more noise. i run the mobile 1 syn also. still running very strong.
i may have to check the adjusments listed above.

Mine was/is a "little" noisier after changing to Mobil1. When starting it turns over easier as well. Switched to Mobil1 about 3K miles ago. Good luck!

SOLUTION FOUND!!

Turns out there was an air bubble in the oil line somewhere, and the bike was actually about 1/2 quart low of oil. I noticed that oil was way up the filler neck when it wasn't earlier. When I filled her back up and made sure the air bubble was gone, noise is now gone.

Thank you all for your help!

Listening to the noise it sounded like your compensator sproket in the Primary is loose. I know you said you found the noise. To me, when you shut the motor off, you can hear it clunking around. Could be a loose primary chain as well, but usually when you hear the primary chain move back and forth and clunk around when you turn it off...this is caused from having a loose front sproket in the primary. Just keep it in mind if the noise comes back. If it is loose and is not fixed, the Charging Rotor will end up wearing out on the splines of the Crank shaft.
