engine life

You can make these motors run a LONG time. You can always drop a top end in them. After that you can change parts in the bottom.

It's all about dumping the right money in at the right time.

I think Ray has close to 60k miles and he's not done a thing to his.

Not sure about that motor specifically...

Had 293,000 miles on a pontiac 3.1Liter V-6 and still going strong!

Ray's got like 50k on his chopper and still going strong!

It all depends on your maintance...

I have a old bud that has a road king 80 cu evo and 150,000 on it. Top end was done at about 80,000. He's still running stock lower end. But its bone stock except for air cleaner and pipes.Just depends on how you ride and maintainance.

yea i have a friend that has a 88 year model EVO it's like a police bike. he put 150.000 miles on the original engine then bought a new long block from hd and has put over 100.000 miles on it, you would never know by looking at the bike itself that it would have that many miles on it so im sure it's all about the maintenance and how much ya twist that right hand:D

Warming up the evo is most important to me. If you don't you will have a leaker that will force you to overhaul it. Billet expansion rate! The other day i was at the Harley shop saw a guy that was pissed because his 96cu in bike overheats when in the parade mode.told me that it shuts down the rear Cly when it overheats. Waiting on Harley to get a fix or he is trading it off.

Yeah the new harley 96 motors have had a overheating issue. There fix for the 07 model was to change the computer module program to dump raw fuel into the rear cylinder when below a certain rpm to help cool it. I'm not sure if they are doing anything different for the 08 models.

Stroker motors typically have a shorter top end life due to accelerated piston speed which in turn increases piston ring / cylinder wear.

Maintenance will do more to prolong engine life than anything else. Oil change every couple thousand miles is way cheaper than engine overhauls...even top ends.

Low rpm operation is a big factor in engine durability as well. Parade duty (putting, profiling, whatever you want to call it) is bad because there is little airflow and below 2000 rpm there isn't alot of oil flow either. Rev em up a little to get some oil flowing. Without the airflow, oil is about the only thing moving heat away from the piston and cylinders.

Dog vet you said Stroker motors typically have a shorter top end life due to accelerated piston speed which in turn increases piston ring / cylinder wear. This is very true with the billet motors we have. Distortion of the cylinders is something that we don't think about when warming the engine up. We have a steel motor mount clamped to a billet head. Steel and aluminum expand at a different rate. Very important to have motor mount torq to spec with the fiber washers in place.

2010 H-D Models if you push throttle grip forward shuts down rear cylinder.
should help in traffic.
Actually starting in 09 the shut down 1 cylinder became an automatic feature that you either enable or disable. The twist forward doesn't do that anymore. You can use it to kill the cruise but that's about it anymore.
