Engine envy.

I have had my 04 chopper for a couple months now and absolutely love it. At first I thought there wouldn't be anything I would ever change on it. But lately my eyes have been straying to the newer choppers and K9's with the 117's, right side drives and fatter rears. I have never ridden something with the 117. Anyone have experiece with both the 107 and the 117 and able to attest to the differences? Should I just shut up and be happy with what I have?

hahaha,
welcome and for the record, you will NEVER be happy with what you have. Always looking for a little more power, a little more chrome, different paint, grips, pegs, pipes, wheels, the list is as long as your budget will allow!

Good luck with whatever 'road' you take!

Hey Kodiak, I had an 03 Mastiff before I got my 05. The 107 was definately more responsive then my 117. I think the 107 motor is one of the best S&S has ever made. Nothing bad about the 117 but the 107 was great.

I can't speak for the 107 but my 117 is so restricted with California emissions crap that it doesn't feel any more powerful then my 07 Harley 96ci. I'm slowly ripping stuff off the bike and making the necessary mods to open up the motor. I just changed the backing plate for the air filter and detached the vapor canister. It has already made a significant impact. Pipes and cams are next.

I understand completely where your coming from. Our group ride recently had me with mostly K-9's and others with 300+ rears and 117's. Can't say I was envious just ..... enamored? Nice bikes those K-9's! Anyway decided I will make my 03 PIT my own, do my own things to it and go up in a couple years to a 300 and 117c.i. unless the right deal comes along. Am always going to keep my eyes open for that next great deal! ........... You never know!

I've got an 04 chopper, and my buddy just bought an 08 K9. I don't ride his like I do mine, but they both get up and move... Mine has had more stuff done to it, and I think it has more power. But, I'm sure he could get more power by doing some mods... If your looking at the newer bikes because of the different style. I would say go for it.. As far as engine and the right side drive goes, it's not worth. Balance is not an issue, when your riding, just a little heavier off the kick stand.

I have a mastiff with 117/300, my bud has a mastiff 107/240. When we light them up he can hang with me, not pass. Keep in mind, mine weighs 3-400lbs more than his.

I have a 05 chopper, my brother has an 04...i cant touch him...i put the super g on tossed the restrictor plates of course but still not close...i will upgrade the cam, deck the heads etc which should get there....but stock for stock the 04s are better...not sure if the later models, 06-09 are better or not, i do know the 05s were hit hard with epa crap

I had an 02 pit and I agree with the 107 being more responsive. 05 chopper now. before taking the restrictor plates out and adding the G carb with the 600 cam I think my pit would of been right there.

I have an '04 Pitbull I ordered new in January 2004. Got it in July :D Well, as most know the 107 was the stock engine at the time. I paid $1500 extra for the 117". Best money I spent. In fact the only other money I spent was on pipes (WCC custom Hellbents), and the WCC cross breather. My bike screams.

In fact just got off of it about 30 minutes ago, still have a shit eating grin from it :D A couple years ago ran into a guy with a newer at the time '06 or '07 Pitbull with a 117"... we got in em and he couldnt touch me.

Unless I am wrong, which is possible sometimes :D In '05 when the 117" became THE engine, they were de-tuned or something to take some of the bark out of em. Ive only been around a couple other dogs, both weren't beefed up, but were 117"s, and neither could touch mine.

I can't imagine what my Pit would do with some mods. To be honest, wont happen. Im VERY content with the performance as is.

Is it possible you got the 117 with different heads before the EPA crap had an impact on performance?

something. Not sure exactly what the difference is between the '04 117 vs. '05-current.... but I know something is different. Seems the weenies at the local BDM dealer said they were de-tuned or something in 2005, & later models. He said it had somethin to do with the EPA but I have no idea what exactly the diffence is... I just know there is definately a difference.

Nope, only difference in the 04 117 is that its all S&S motor with the standard size valves but still has the epa length cylinders and shitty 547 cam along with the wimpy springs.

Yea 05 117's and I think part of 06 had the EPA motors. Smaller valves, weaker springs, restrictor plates, & smaller carb. These are ailments that I plan to cure shortly.

PS. Did they de-tune the ignition also??

3-400 lbs more??? Are you referring to bike+rider? The117/300 Mastiff is a little over 400 lbs, the older Mastiff's weren't in the 400 lb range. Just asking for some clarification...

Thanks

I've been emailing back and forth with S&S looking for info on the motor in the K-9. You are correct al the 117's come with .546 cam, wimpy springs, and standard rocker arms (disclaimer.. my 08 K-9 ) So looks like, new valve springs, roller rockers and cam. Interesting fact is S&S recommends
.585 cam rather tahn the .600 cam. I suspect it's due to the fact you'll need to change valve springs and my personal preference would be roller rockers.

Thanks guys. I am still getting used to this beast too. Riding it yesterday I was bombing up a long hill with a nice gradual bend, I hit a sweet spot while flying through the gears that threw my butt back out of the seat. I'm not sure how stock my internals are but it's got super trap pipes and a K&N filter. I love the pull of this thing, but I really need to slow down or the po po is gonna take my pup. I am thinking I will keep this one for a while and upgrade to something newer with less miles if the right deal comes around.
