Engine cutting out and dies

My 2004 Ridgeback cuts out going down the Highway . It also cuts out and dies at lower speed. It starts just fine and idles fine. I recently rebuilt the carburetor in hopes this would fix the issue. It idles better, but this did not fix the problem. It will start cutting out and getting less and less gas...eventually dieing. It will start up just fine and idle fine Could this be a fuel issue or a crank sensor issue or what?

Possible the liner in the tank is coming off and getting on your petcock screen

Yeah sounds like the liner…mine had the same problem. Take the bowl off the carb and see if there is any chunks of stuff or drain the tank and scope it.

Another variable is a clogged gas cap vent. Top off gas tank, turn petcock on/mighty-vac if vacuum type, gas line in a container, watch to see if the flow goes slower or stops all together. Topping off is key or wait for the air in it now to start a vacuum, thus topped off has less volume to override.

I have a tri-bar gas cap and I lost the original gasket and made a wide flat rubber gasket—it did the same thing as yours. Blacktoppr said “Duh…. loosen the gas cap when that happens”. I did and the bike immediately stopped sputtering and smoothed out. Hello Mr. Obvious!! Went with an O- ring instead of a flat rubber gasket. Problem solved.

Did you replace the black rubber caps when you did the rebuild? They crack and suck air over time. Makes em run like crap. Like others have said, check the liner in the tank. Perhaps a temp inline clear gas filter will show any liner?

If you determine that fuel is not your problem yes, the Cam Sensor is a real possibility especially if the problem seems to happen after the engine is well warmed up. Sometimes its visually melted/damaged.
