Electronic Cruise Control for Big Dog Motorcycles

Hi,

I just received an email suggesting I mention that we make fully electronic cruise controls for motorcycles - and have done since 1997 - on this forum.

We have just released a new electric servo and computer which make our kits aesthetically more acceptable to the cruiser market.

Interestingly, I visited Big Dog Motorcycles in Wichita city in 2008 in the middle of hurricane Ike - heaviest rain I have ever ridden in from Durant OK, to Big Dog then halfway to Pueblo CO. Chicago had 12" as I recall. Not sure what I experienced en route. I ran at 79mph on my Honda Pacific Coast - loaded to the gunwales - the only issue was aquaplaning, so I stuck to the 'high-ground' on the interstate.

Clearly I have a vested interest in letting you know about our products, as I am a Director of the company MotorCycle Cruise Controls, so this is simply to let you know that such products do exist. I won't say more, but if you want to contact us my profile shows all the details.

I read the FAQ and as far as I can tell I am not breaching your rules. As I said, a member asked me to let you know, but I am not sure he wanted his name mentioned, so I won't, until he allows me to.

Regards,

Tony

I have had a mechanical cruise control for 3 yrs on my 2003 Chopper. you get to the speed you want and drop the black lever down and it rest on the front break lever. I love it. When you throttle down it slider with you. Here is a pic of it. BTW $25.00

What about an INTRO with pics, your webpage, contact details, etc. etc?

Intro to McCruise - since you asked for it.

First the web site - Home Page | Motorcycle Cruise Controls

Background (in brief) - I used a throttle lock in the early '90s because I can't ride more than 10 minutes without my fingers going numb. Had a stupid slow speed accident in '91 and stuffed my neck and a few other things. It annoyed me that I had to constantly adjust the throttle lock - so we adapted car cruise control, developed the cable interface unit - and started the business.

Seventeen years later we are still here, but now we have developed our own computer, software and lastly the new electric servo which opens up the cruiser market - because aesthetics is everything....

I see the other posts about throttle locks - and if they serve your purpose - fine. But if you are looking for the real thing - at least now you know where to find them. There's stacks of information on the web site about our history, 'dramas' and successes.

The bottom line is - we are never likely to make a model-specific cruise for Big Dog Motorcycles - they are all unique it seems. But we now have the capacity to deliver a 'universal' kit which can be fitted and setup pretty easily by any capable home mechanic. And be more of a talking point than a downer on your bike. You will be blown away by the performance and, we hope, impressed by the quality and reliability. Our new software even allows you to drive our cruise control with other cruise switch gear - likely to be required for bikes where looks is everything.

So - now you know. If you want to discuss it - just email us at sales@mccruise.com. Give us a phone number if you want and we can call and have a chat. We can also send model-specific instructions like those for the Harley Davidson Street Bob so you can see what you get for your money.

They are not for everyone. But for those of us who want to keep riding, but for whatever reason riding is causing us grief (our bodies or the Police?) - McCruise can save your health and your license allowing you to keep riding. What's more, you will be surprised just how much more relaxing and safe it can be NOT constantly monitoring the bloody speedo and watching for cops, but instead checking the road surface and watching out for those homicidal maniacs trying to kill you in tin tops!

In 2008 I had the pleasure of being followed by a State Trooper in Arkansas for 90 miles, just sitting right on the speed limit on cruise. He never even looked like booking me - but to be fair I WAS a bit over the limit when I first passed him! Lucky my mate (who is a local from South Carolina) was behind me, recognized what he was in his black charger and with radio comms warned me about him. After all the cruise can work from 22 mph up to 110mph!

Jonathan,
You need to charge your phone and download some of the 758 photo's on your phone, its slowing it down:roll:

Just one other thing - my fuel range increases by about 33% on my VFR750 and TDM900 with the cruise. On bikes with small tanks - that can make a big difference. The best we ever heard of was a guy on a Honda Valkyrie - rode from Texas to NC to get a cruise fitted in 1998. On the way there he had to go to reserve fuel at 112 miles - on the way back he had to change to reserve at 168 miles! Repeatedly. He must have been a real 'throttle jockey' to gobble that much fuel. Even so - it is an impressive improvement.

my suggestion is to put your cruise control on one of the members bike here, if it gets a good recommendation, there are people that will buy it.

if we will pay 500 dollars for an air cleaner that supposed to give you 4 hp, then we will pay for a cruise control that actually works.

Re 'Word of Mouth'

That is definitely what sells our products. Look at any of the reviews/testimonials on our web site. I already have e member interested in me quoting. I need a bit of time, because we are buried in development at the moment - Suzuki DL1000 2014 model; HD Sportster; trying to get a Victory; am writing up a BMW G650GS which hopefully MCN will review; an ATV in Sweden which is being developed using GPS steering combined with our QuadCruise....and so on. We are a bit busy!

I hope to develop and cost an appropriate 'universal' kit within a week, but I need lots of info about the bikes to do that right: do they come with a cruise control lever on the throttle body?; do they have a digital speed signal?; can we get at the Tach signal ( we monitor and cross reference speed and engine RPM for safety); do they have a clutch switch we can access?; Canbus?; fly by wire?; what electrical connectors are used?; do we have them in stock? ; what high tension leads do the bikes' use? - they MUST have suppressed leads!

We don't like 'scotch locks' and NEVER use them - worst case - like BMWs - we use Sumitomo one-way sealed connectors as a 'pigtail' into the bike's main harness using proper splice terminals requiring roll crimpers (Utilux #61) and heat shrink for a permanent, secure connection. There are only 5 electrical connections: battery negative (the best protected connection from high voltage spikes); tach signal (coil - low tension); speed - standard square wave up to very high frequency acceptable; clutch; & brakes. Tach simulates clutch, if clutch is not accessible.

Got to go to bed. 11:33pm Tuesday here now.

Checked the website looks very cool and for some unique applications. Not my personal cup o tea for my bikes I like them primitive. But very cool innovation and looks like a good option for folks that don't have one of these new touchscreen HDs.

McCruise Big Dog Product development

Just a brief word about a couple of things:
  1. Fuel consumption - I think cars and trucks do obtain significant fuel savings from good cruise controls. I first put one on my Nissan Pintara - an Aussie car - and got 13.6km/litre instead of about 10km/litre when I was in control. That occurred on a 3000 mile trip to Queensland in 1996. I also didn't get booked 3 times I know about - and Heaven knows how may other times I didn't know about.
  2. New product on mccruise.com for information at MotorCycle Cruise Control for Big Dog Motorcycles - 'universal' kit | Motorcycle Cruise Controls seeking a 'guinea pig' to assist in development.

Cruise for Big Dog Motorcycles

Hi all,

Interest in this project seems to have died - unless it is free - and past experience tells us that simply doesn't work for us. Consequently, since I am really busy with other matters......I have to let you know that we are putting this project aside until someone is seriously interested. See here for details of what information is required: Interested in helping develop a cruise kit for Big Dog Motorcycles? Email us if you want to discuss it - sales@mccruise.com

Without access to bikes in Australia, the development of a kit is in your hands.
