New Tag Light Wiring Question???

Ok this is for the electrically inclined since i don't want to risk blowing my EHC if ya know what I mean!

So, today I bought a new LED license tag bracket. As you can see it has a blue, red, and black wires. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think if I hook up the red and black wires to the existing red and black wires that went to my stock plate that should give me a running tail light and plate illuminating(white) light. Now my question is if I hook up the two tail light wires (RED), shown in the second pic still attached to the female connector and run those two together then run them down to my BLUE wire on the new plate for the brake light...will it work? :confused:
I also am not using my stock brake/turn signals. Those are completely off.

Hope this makes some sense...I apologize ahead of time for sounding a little electrically challenged! Any insight, or direction would be great.

Are you getting rid of your turn signals?

Either of the brake signal lines from the turn signals will work. Do not use both -- just one.

Only issue MAY be the added load of the new brake light IF you are retaining the OEM turn signals. The EHC may have a problem with the additional load. Just a thought, I got rid of the EHC since it has more problems than a high maintenance blonde that doesn't put out.

I will be adding turn signals eventually...but right now all i want is a running tail light and a brake light when I apply the brakes.

Man, Im really hesitant to connect one of the brake lights and possibly overload the EHC. Those f#ckers are expensive!

Are you just replacing your old tag mount with another that has both tag illumination and a running (marker) light, all built in as 1 unit, no signal capability's?

Is the wiring for the tag light and the running already together, just 1 pair only, or separate, 1 pair tag and 1 pair running?

Are the tag and running both LED lights?

Do you have a multi-meter that can measure resistance or ohms?

If so, what does the combination of the "new" tag mount read in comparison to the "old" tag mount?

I think it is separate due to the three wires on the the new tag. When I test the tag on the battery the red was for the the running tail light and white lights for the tag. It does have a blue wire which i assume is the brake light.

I do own a meter but am challenged when using it.
 
If the new one only has 3 wires coming from it, the there is a running and a tag (+) 2 separate wires, and a common ground (-). But if there are 4 wires coming from it there may be a brake light or just separate ground wires.

What do your instruction indicate the wires to be?

no instructions...got it at a local shop. he did say it had the brake light though (dual function running/brake light)

So you think there is no brake light?

Is there a way to test?
 
That depends, when you illuminated the tag light, what or how did you connect the ground too, to make it work?

No ground, just mounted on the bike frame?

So, 1 wire to the positive of the battery and 1 wire to the negative of the battery, correct?
If so, what color was the wire?
And you used the same color wire on the batt. negative to energize to other light as well?

or

1 wire to the positive of the battery and the new tag mount housing to the negative of the battery, and the 3rd wire disconnected?

The reason I'm asking all of this is because most bikes all use the chassis as the ground connection in their electrical systems. Where BDM does "NOT", all of the grounds run back to the EHC.

I put the black wire on the neg side and the red on the pos side...when i did that the taillights and plate lights illuminated.
Now when i added the blue wire to the pos side of the terminal the brake light got brighter.

You didn't mention the "black" wire previously, just the red, white, and blue wires! 3 wires! :lol::lol::lol:

Now I get it...DUH :loony:, there are actually 4 wires, red, white, blue and black, correct? :D

OK I got you now!!! :2thumbs:

Red & Black illuminate running and tag lights and then the blue is just for the brake light option. :2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

Ok, take your multimeter and set it on 2K (or nearest setting) and measure the resistance across the two wires in your "old" tag mount lights and tell me the reading. If it reads - or nothing then reverse your leads, because LED are diodes and only read 1 way.

Then do the same thing on the "new" tag mount lights, measuring across between the red and black wires and tell me what they are reading on your meter.

ok sorry for sounding confused but when i put the multimeter on 2k it automatically reads 1.
when i put it on the old tag wires (coming off the bike) it reads .996

can't seem to get a reading off of anything else.

When i measure the new tag does the new tag have to be connected?
