electrical problems with 05 chopper

Hi fellow Big Doggers- I need to know if anyone with a Chopper has had ongoing problems with the electrical system on their bike. I started having problems with the electrical system on my bike the first year I had my bike. Whe the bike was warm and I was riding up the road, the bike would totally shut down and I would have to pull off of the side of the road and restart the bike. Once I got the bike restarted, I would ride it again for a little while and it would shut off again and I would have to do the same thing again. The service dept @ Big Dog of Tampa couldnt find the electrical problem. Im pretty frustrated at this point so if anyone has had simialr problems to the one I mentioned, please let me know. Otherwise Im going to put this Dog to rest. Mike

Those problems in the past have stemmed from guys that have 10 lbs of shit hanging from there key ring! Do you have anything more than just the key in the ignition switch.

Also tell us what fault lights you have lit up on the EHC if any.

Welcome to the forum,
Ray

Any problems with the tach lights, high/low beam, speedo needle? If you recycle the key on the side of the road does it start up again, and you can ride a little while longer until the same thing happens again? Just curious.

I had the same issues.. see this thread.

http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/technical/4664-little-diag-help.html

also check this thread, mostly on the second page.

I believe it was the jumper removal that solved my issues.. so see if you have one installed If you are running the EHC with the USB connector.
If you have the older round connector Replace the ignition switch. Hope this helps.. Let up know how it works out. :2thumbs: And don't add any extra stuff to your ignition key

I just fixed this problem on a 2005 chopper, turned out to be his key switch was bad. When you lose power while riding, if you quickly hit run does it fire right back up? If so, its probably the key switch. This dudes switch was really messed up, really mushy.

Had the exact same problems as if I hit my engine cut off switch. Took bike into dealer and the mechanic (Jeff) knew exactly what it was when I described the problem. He replaced the tach board and the next day I started a 1300 mile journey. Just got back and I have not had any issues, the bike ran great, even through 5 days of non-stop rain!

I have a similar problem on my 05 chopper. It drains the battery in about 100 miles of riding the bike. I have the LED board below the tachometer and some of the LEDs are dimly lit even when they aren't suppose to be, while bike running. Anyone has an idea?

I would say check all your connections to the battery and make sure they're tight and don't have corrosion and good solid connections. If all your connections are tight/secure, then either you have a bad battery or bad charging system. You may want to perform a search, there's been numerous threads on this subject. By the way welcome to the site...

Thanks. I sorted it out. My battery wasn't charging. I had a loose connection. After tightening the screw it charges now fine. On Sunday I got stuck because of that 40 miles away from my home, in a rain.

You state electrical issue, does everything die such as lights, tack, etc??? Another possibility is venting on gas gap, starves engine and stalls out as if you are out of gas, but generaly restarts. If this is a possibility try loosening your cap and see if it sucks air big time, as if it were under vacuum. If so remove the guts to the vent at center of cap.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if problems persist.

I wish I had more money.
Go give us an intro! You'll get a better response. And after that start a new thread with your specific issues. It helps guys that have the same issues when they use the search function.
