Has anyone came across this yet ?? sometimes I go to start my 06 k9, I hit the start button and I can hear the compression release click, but wont turn over ..then I hit the start a few more times then it works fine ..sometimes I can go several weeks before it will do it again , this has been going on for 2 summers now ...I have replace the battery , vm , stator, rotor, startor ( not due to this issue ) still does it once in a while ..sometimes I have to hit the start button 6 to 10 times ... any ideas ?????

Is this a certain momentum the crank is stuck at, comes up and then we have it cycled past BTDC. Now it fires on the ATDC so there is more momentum and it starts easier on that after top dead?

Because you are chasing a phantom. I don't know where it's coming from but I'm going to change everything but I think I answered my own question is that compression release.

Battery = You know, I've replaced the battery but after awhile the battery is fine starting up the bike. So I replaced the battery again and it did it again. Battery starts the bike right up without a problem. We see that move it can't be the battery?

3 Loop Charge = You know, this is not related, but I changed the stator/rotor/vr and it's usually never all 3 at once. As in, it's not spark/comp/fuel as in it just stopped running and it's all 3 causes.

For 200 dollars, Alex, I'll take C for compression.

But maybe you have a other issue lose wire .Hope somebody can give you more info on this forum.:2thumbs:

I will take it by your description that the starter solenoid is not even trying to engage..

Im diagnosing a similar problem on mine right now. Its hard to chase it down when the problem is not being consistent.

Here are some of the possibilities.....Bad EHC, Bad wiring between ehc & starter, bad starter solenoid....and probably more...

If you can catch it not starting, you could unplug the small green wire to the starter solenoid trigger and run run a jumper wire from the starter solenoid to the + on the battery and see if the starter engages. Doing that completely bypasses the ehc and starting circuit wiring. Keep in mind doing it that way will not engage the compression releases....

Do you have a wiring diagram for your bike?

An EHC does not slow down a kick over.

Bad wiring between ehc & starter

Bad grounds or wires last for weeks and start up again.

That's more like it. A direct car jumper cable setup from battery to bench test the starter in the frame. So yeah, directly tag the ground to the frame ground and if the starter lags, pull the plugs.

Keep in mind doing it that way will not engage the compression releases...
That's it. The compression releases should lag the start load and hang as per what you are complaining about. Then, pull the spark plugs and try it again. Battery spins like a mother w/plugs out, back to compression, correct? See if that's what you are up against unless you can ytube it so we can hear it too.

What about your pcb contacts... are they clean?

... and for this matter.... are ALL contacts clean & tight?

PS: leave the EHC alone... sure it´s not its fault. (but again, make sure the contacts are clean & tight too!)

thanks guys ...I will try cleaning my wires again , I even took my start/switch apart one time and didn't help , pretty sure cant be my starter due to it had the problem before and after the starter was replace ,plus you can clearly hear the comp/release clicking but nothing in the starter at all ,,,I was hoping someone had the same problem and could just tell how to fix it ..I will just keep playing with it ...got a bagger now for back up anyway

Send your starter to Wild Steed and have it disassembled, checked and cleaned, also have a slam button installed to keep you from getting stranded. I had the same problem, and being an old starter rebuilder myself I did this to mine and have not had any problems since. Good Luck

yeah I messed around with the green wire last year don't remember the out come ,other than it wasn't the problem , but when it does it again I will try jumping it to the battery , and if the starter "does engage "what do you think the problem is ? .... also I just remembered when it first did it I was replacing the battery ...maybe its a ground cable , mite try replacing the ground cable , pretty much change everything else...

I don't think its a starter issues , and I had the button on the starter at one time but the button fell out so I put the old cover back on ...thanks though

Remove spark plugs; ground them away from the holes or it will flame out there if the plug is close. Now try to see if there is a lag. If it spins like a mofo, what does that tell you?

1. Ain't the battery.
2. Ain't the contacts.
3. Ain't the starter motor.
4. Ain't compression a mofo?

 Anymore?

Your start button sends a ground signal to the ECH to send a ground to the green trigger wire to the starter. You have a ground/12v or button problem. Turn the key on and ground the green wire to the battery. If it starts you have a button problem. If not, you have a button problem or a ECH problem with either the green wire ground or the 12v to the starter. If it doesn't start:

Put a test light on the green wire (touch the pos side of the battery) at the starter and press the button. If it lights up then the ground and button are good.

Put the test light on the 12v (touch the neg side of the battery) with the key on. If it lights up and the green lit up then it's the solenoid or starter. if it doesn't light up on either wire you are back to the button/ECH or your starter relay if your bike has one.

Good luck
