My friend just called me about a problem with his 2005 Ridgeback. It was smoking alot coming from under the seat. He turned off the ignition and the horn was blowing the Hazard lights were flashing and the the bike started by its self without the key in the ignition. Could this be the EHC taking a shiz? I have not looked at the bike in person to see if it could be a short somewhere else. Please help Thanks Mike:bang:

Sounds like he let the smoke out of FRED.
That smoke is magic, it's what makes a FRED work in the first place.
Once you let the magic smoke out, that FRED will never work right again.

If there is not a short somewhere then yes, it is the EHC.:nopity:

Maybe the voltage regulator went out and fried the EHC. check to see if he has the big fuse or the circuit breaker at the battery.

btw: a RED is a Ridiculous Electrical Device, you might can guess what the F is for.

Had a similar problem one day with my 2009 k-9. my starter plunger stuck and the bike kept turning over even with the key on or off! Had to disconnect the battery terminal to stop it. Took the back off of starter and unstuck and cleaned up the contact area and its been fine since, knock on wood! As far as his horn and flashers they may have come on because the battery was getting low! Hope this helps! Could also be a shorted wire in the circuit. Good luck:flag:

My 05 did the same thing, ton of smoke from under the seat. Lucky for me I had a 10 mm wrench in my pocket and was able to disconnect the battery.

It was the EHC and back in those days it was replaced under warranty.

Smoke is never good when it's associated with electrical. He should be able to remove the EHC and smell it to see if that's the culprit. If so, time for a new one. Can he tell us what lights are lit up on the EHC when it's running?
