EHC related problems??

Every connection Cleaned and Di-electric greased
Heat wrapped connectors I knew I wouldnt be messing with
Fuel tank petcock flows nicely (not fuel related im assuming)
Replaced most grounds with new eye hooks crimps double checked
Headlight harness I re-did with di-electric grease, wirecaps and some solder connector is good

So after I thought I figured it all out... I'm thinking I could be wrong. I have the new Dyna 2Ki ignition on the way and old stuff out waiting on install. Anyhow I've been going through the bike very throughly took controls off cleaned connectors, Took tach apart cleaned and inspected connections, Took headlight apart cleaned and inspected those connections aswell! So every connection got cleaned di-electric greased and grounds have been cleaned and retightend.

So here is where im at.. I currently experianced all this wiring nightmare after my nutrual light went out and my stator plug started slipping out, So I tried to tackle both problems got my stator plug back in nicley still no neutrual light i tried jumping the connections to make it come on however it still hasent, Every other light works on the tach ring... One major problem is this!!! My headlight circut on the EHC i belive is crapped out.. I currently have it being jumperd from my licence plate light works smooth as butter that way, but if i remove the jumper it doesnt work at all and the orange light will come on the EHC then eventually it will start with the 4 way blinking, So maybe the problem with my shut downs is NOT ignition module related???

So what do you guys think... EHC related?

What Orange Light on the EHC comes on? you have an 04, none should be Orange Just Red/Green/Yellow. All fault lights are Red though.

Question, When you have your headlight not jumpered does your headlight not work but if you flip it over to high beam does your high beam light illimunate on the tach?

Before you set up the jumper, did you test the voltage going to the headlight? I would remove the jumper and test the votage to the headlight also check to ensure you have continuity with your ground at the headlight. Next step would be is to test voltage on the main power harness pins. Pin 17 is low beam, check it agaisnt pin 36 which is the ground for the headlight.

Let us know what you got. If you got no voltage coming from the PINS on the low beam then I would say it's safe to say your EHC has gone tits up. Pending your grounds are good and battery is in good shape as you stated above.

I actually have it running to the yellow wire, Which I belive is High-beam.. and it does not illuminate on the tach, When i remove the jumper wire it will illuminate then start flashing irratically. Ill go check that out and report back! Oh and the lights on the EHC, when i press run the red ignition light will come on, and then the headlight hi or low will be lit up red.. Bad im guessing

When you hit start the red igntion light will come on is a good thing

if the headlight fault light comes on thats a bad thing. That means you have a break in that circuit. Could be a be a pinched wire under the tank. Could also mean your EHC is bad, but check the pin and if you got 12v at the pin than it's somewhere in the wire between there and the bucket.

FYI- The Yellow wire is low beam and you may be overloading that circuit...

Ok so I'm here now messing with the bike removed my jumper wire... Played with it and I got it to where low beam works and hi beam works... Strange now sometimes when I hit high or low it seems like it restarts or something weird I have 12v where it should be and I actually have power reading from the ground that could be an issue yeah?

okay lets get a better unstanding

1. Do you have 12v constantly on your yellow wire in your headlight bucket?
Yes/No?
2. Do you have 12v on the White Wire in your headlight bucket when you hit the high beam on the handlebar?
Yes/No?
3. While high beam is on recheck your yellow you should have 12v still
Yes/No?

In the end do we still have the fault light on the EHC coming on or is that gone now?

Power reading from the ground? I dont understand? What do you mean power? Like if you put your meter lead on the ground wire and then ground your other lead to say the inside of the headlight bucket you have voltage reading?

Brew,

I assume he is saying he ran his jumper from the taglight to the yellow wire to get a running light/lo beam on the headlight. Which is correct, just running jumper wires usually results in a snowball effect of electrical problems. Tough to diagnose once you start ripping and tearing things apart, creates messes.

Whoops missed the part where he tapped into the tag light. My bad...

Even though Eric is steering down the right course, I just have to ask...What "restarts"? :confused:Where are you measuring this? From what point to what point?

Just curious. :)

Dennis

Yea Dennis, no idea what he means there with power reading from the ground. I asked the same thing  If it's a true statement we got serious problems

He stated the light works so ground must be functioning correctly

Ok, So after a long day of testing lol here is what I have....

Yes I had it jumperd from the tag light, I took the jumper off and if magically worked... Everything worked as it should... Low beam worked, High Beam worked..However still had red lights on the EHC coming on Just 1 red one then it would switch as i push the button Now the werid part when I hit say high beam on the controls its seems to resest the system casue tach sweeps and odo aswell.

Next issue was I put the multimeter leads black on the headlight bucket and the red on the black ground wire in the bucket and it actualy showed power.. Not to sure what thats all about.. The White (hi) had 12v when powered and the Yellow (low) had 12v when powerd..

Also Double checked all connections and crimps today aswell.. It was functioning just fine However im sure over time it will start to work then not work rinse repeat like it has in the past.

So im assuming my EHC wants to work and sometimes it doesnt?

Installed the Dyna 2ki Ignition tonight, and also fiddeld with the head-light again.. Low-beam works then it will play a game of peek a boo for a lil while then stop, Hi beam seems to be working just fine does not cut out, Then low beam will eventually start to work again..

The werid thing is that When i switch to high from low beam the system seems to resest and i mean by that... The speedo will fluctuate Cant quite figure that one out lol

So hows the bike run minus the headlight issue?

It is rather odd. I don't really know what you mean by the speedo resets? Like lights go on/off? Is it a flicker, or just on/off?

Everyone on here might scream to the high heavens its the EHC, they might be right. But I'll tell you that it may just be a loose/pinched wire somewhere under your tank.

On the K9 I just had to rewire the left front blinker. I took the LED out tested the leads and I had 12v on the running light, and when I pressed the blinker only got up to 4.5v. I tested the right side, when the blinker on it's intermetitant at 12v. I knew I had a short somewhere, didn't have enough voltage to get the BLINK. I knew it wasn't the ground or else the running light wouldn't work either. Tested under the battery box coming from the PDM had intermettent 12v , just what I needed. Ran a new wire from the PDM through the backbone, bingo

It may be stupid, but have you changed out the head light? Or did I miss reading that. You may have a low beam getting ready to go out is why I say this...:D

That does make pretty good sense... It runs fantastic... Only issue is when i jam on the gas ( sitting still ) it will hesitate sometimes.. but other times nothing.. Guessing thats an A/F mixture type thing there..

I really would love love love to say its nothing under the tank.. But who knows.. I have had the tank off several times cleaned every connector and di0electric greased them and made sure no wires were coming out of the plugs.. as far as chaffed wire I also insspected them as far as I could and seen nothing.. Who knows May have to dig deeper.. Or I may just hard-wire the headlight and ride till the EHC completly dies lol. As far as my blinkers goes they blink properly nothing the matter there.. Controls work.. I dont have a horn but I see the light lighting up when i hit the button so Im guessing all is well, except for the headlight.. I wont be able to see if it cures the randomly dieing.. but I think its safe to say with a brand new ignition system.. If it dies randonly again Safe to say EHC is going bad.

And btw, Yes I have changed the headlight.. 3 times actually just to be safe lol!

I've just decided to bite the bullet and pull out the EHC and order up the wire plus, I figure atleast then I can actually rely on it.
