EHC may have died!

Just an update as of today,

I have had enough and can not risk putting the riding season in jeopardy. The problem came back for no reason. The Dog has been sitting in a nicely heated/cooled garage. So, as soon as I pay bills, the EHC is coming out and WP going in. I check/cleaned and plugged/unplugged the EHC connections to attempt to get a smoking gun but nothing. Same old situation. All the EHC lights light up for an abnormal time and the the turn signals blink. That is all I get.

Oh well,

Nukeranger.

PS I can duplicate the problem by simply grounding pin 36 which is the same as turning the key switch on.

That sucks Huw! Wonder if anybody on this forum has a spare lying around that you can use for testing purposes only. Just to ensure that the EHC really is the problem.

Too late,

I have taken the old EHC out and the first wire is cut. The bad part is there are a lot of wires so I won't be riding tomorrow. So, I guess I'll miss out on riding in the rain!

Hey Nukerange if it makes you feel any better, the same thing happened to me. I'm riding along and my speedo and hand controls go dead. I go about 25 miles and every thing comes back.
Went through the whole troubleshooting, VR,stator, back bone harness and the only thing different is none of my lights on my EHC will come on so I order a PDM from Big Dog about 2 weeks ago. Good luck on your rewire.

Its all good once the first wire is cut its all down hill from there. I agree no need to wait on the install its winter so bike needs to work here in a month when we hit the 65-70's!

Call me if you got any questions. I got some notes written down from my install.

I know you bought it from Jake did he send you his installation instructions?

To my knowledge the WP is NOT 12v everywhere. The hand control are still 5v, my understanding is a constant 12 would fry the boards. Thats why when people go for a complete re-wire they have to get new hand controls.

Yep, jake sent me instructions when I bought it. I also maintain my original key switch with an extra relay setup. I have all the grounds cut, bundled, and connected except for the horn. I expect to spend the day tomorrow hooking each component up and testing along the way. I gave my EHC every possible chance to remain in the Dog prior to making this move.

I didn't know you installed your WP. I might have to call you if I get stuck. I thought it was 12 volts everywhere. I'll have to check this out.

I have completed step 26 of close to 40 steps of instruction. Here are some pictures. There are a lot of small wires, numbers, etc. So, if you can't see well then you will need reading glasses and a magnifying glass. I put the Relay to keep the Big Dog key switch up front of the battery box. I am only able to work on it part time so this might take a while!

:eek:There are wires everywhere....I hope I get them right!:D Also, there are six terminals on the ground post and four on the positive side.

I finished installing my WP today. Everything works just fine. I went for a test ride to make sure all was good. The self canceling turn signals work just like before. The emergency flashers work by depressing a turn signal twice with a pregnant pause but the headlight stays on vice turning off (This will run a battery dead quick). The run and off switch toggle the ignition module on and off (both do the same function). The original Big Dog key switch works fine.

I dressed up the wiring some but will do more when I get some good run time. It actually looks quite good and I could leave it alone.
My second run for an appointment was all good. If I learn any new tips with WP, I'll post them here with an edit.
I noticed my Key is not as hot after riding like it used to be with the EHC. Interesting difference!

Turning the Key Switch On and pushing Start is all that is required now. It is much easier than pushing Run first with the EHC.
Self Cancelling as described above is the same.
Run and Off only toggle the ignition module power
The headlight does not turn off when starting the bike like the EHC did.
Horn works normal
High and Low beam buttons toggle the high and low so you can use either
When turning the ignition switch on the high beam comes on and then it switches to low.

Yea its not hard just time consuming.

Everything should work like normal when you are done. I installed the relay as well so I didn't have to remove the tank. I think I'm going to take the relay out this winter and put in the correct switch. If I recall the big dog switch is a low voltage switch, hence the additonal relay. However WP recommends ditching the low voltage switch to a normal 12v Harley switch

I would like to change mine over to the Vulcan dual coil setup at the same time because it looks bad ass :D

Of course I am.:D

Now that I know what I am doing, I could get yer done in a day while drinking beer. The colder the beer the better I can see those little numbers.

Seriously though Curt, if you ever need to replace your EHC and choose WP, I'll be there to help.

Thanks for the compliments,

I am thinking about combining some of the battery post wires when I clean up the wiring harness'. That way I can have less terminal lugs on the battery posts.

Since I have appeared to create a double post, I will edit this one and just say it rained like crazy all day long so I installed my Spyke starter button from Curtis and it looks and works great.

Ok,

The Shakedown riding is complete with no more electrical problems. My original EHC went to Curtis for him to play with and diagnostics. Here are some final pictures. I am not going to make it real professional looking because I would rather ride and it is under the seat so who cares. I have been riding around town, to and from work and into the city.
