I have had this bike for 2 months and it is wearing me out. I've been riding for 18+ years and never had i bike dissapoint me so much. I was riding home from Panama City bike week yesterday and stopped to rest. When i tried to start it, the EHC just clicks. I had to have my buddies roll start me (very embarassing.) Any ideas? Im really close to giving up on this thing and going back to a metric. Please help!

Thanks for the support. But this isnt the only problem i've had in the short time i've had this bike. Its left me pushin more than once. Once again, thanks for the support. Now if someone has any positive advice or info on this situation, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your problems, have you checked your battery connections, ground, starter connections? What about your EHC pin connector? Have you used dielectric grease on the main EHC connector? I know this sounds stupid, but what condition is your battery in and do you keep it on a battery tender?

EHC FREE!!!!
I am having problems of my own, but I still think the bike is well worth it!!!

Sounds like your battery is weak. You need to keep it on a battery tender anytime you are not riding. There are a couple of LED's that stay on all the time and drain the battery if you don't ride it for a week or two. If you are keeping it on a battery tender, then maybe it is the charging system on the bike.

Another round please
Does your front light work when you turn on key? Same thing happened to me. Sounds like your EHC. On my 3rd here. Wouln't sell it for anything though.

Hey, I am very willing to help but saying your going back to metric doesn't push my hot button. I would start with checking your battery voltage not running. (12.6 or more if at a normal state of charge) Then fire it up and check it at 2000 rpm. (13.5-14 approx) If they both check out 03 was known for eating starters with no compression releases. You can check for voltage to your solenoid when hitting the start button. If you have it then it's probably your solenoid or starter. Now installing compression releases and a headlight kill switch will help with your starter problems. Also connections and ground checks.

Everyone is giving you sound advice. It's an 03 and they didn't have that many problems with the EHC. It's probably your battery or something along that line.

I keep it on a battery tender at all times. I also ride it about every day on and off post. Just seems odd for the starter to go bad all at once while riding. In my experience they tend to give some warning. Also have new battery.

Ok so i tested my voltage at the starter. Im getting almost 13.5 volts when i press the starter button. So maybe the starter is bad. Any suggestions on starters and compression releases?

If the voltage is good and the button too...

And I'm not sure what you think you hear clicking but its not the EHC. Maybe compression releases, but not sure about an 03. Perhaps the solenoid like I suggest checking above.

And as far as metric... understand this. The BDM is a hot rod. Talk to anybody with a classic hotrod and ask if they've had problems with it... of coarse they have. Its a big mean beast of a bike that shims shakes and vibrates panties and bras off. Its like a woman... if you ride it, it will give you problems.

I went thought 2 or 3 starters on my 03 in 3000 miles. The headlight kill module is supposed to help. Mine always grunted. I think it's possible to install manual compression releases. It may be tapped already. Pulling it right out of my aise from all my hours on this site.

If yours does not already have compression releases, all 03's were supposed to be tapped for them. I don't have them. I feel your pain. I had over 30 bikes in the last 40 years and many of them were much hotter than BD. This is the first bike that I thought about reporting stolen and dumping in the nearest lake. Don't buy that "hotrod bike" shit. 150+ hp is a hotrod bike. Metrics are running 200 hp and they ain't pushing them fuckers. To begin with, the S&S or TP motor will not let you down. The baker transmission will not let you down. The fucking EHC will. If you don't want to keep pushing that bad boy for the rest of the time you own it, rewire, rewire, rewire. 99.9% of all posts here trace back to the EHC. It's all fun and games when you're under warranty but after that runs out you're gonna pay. EHC is the weak point on the bike, always has been and aways will be. Had mine rewired so the first notch on the key is starter only then after it starts I turn it one more notch for lights. Good Big Boar battery and tender and have had no trouble since rewire 3 years ago. You have a right to be pissed and if someone thinks you don't, let them push your bike back from the bar. These are expensive bikes and BD has done themselves a disservice by not fixing the electrics 10 years ago when they first knew EHC's were a weak link. Good luck on the fix.

You're still riding the bitch so I must not be that bad.

Kyle, your bike doesn't have compression release. Start with a good battery. I don't have any problems starting my bike. It's an 03 with over 9K on it and it runs fine. You can down the road when the EHC takes a dump rewire the thing. I used a Thunderheart micro harness to replace the original Thunderheart. It's in a billet box and everything is enclosed and nothing is in the open.

Thanks for all the help everybody. Especially rainman and 01mastiff. Maybe the metric statement was a little harsh, but at least it got some attention. Im gettin about 13.5 volts at the starter when i hit the button, so i guess not a EHC prob. Im gonna pull the starter and check it out. Any tips on a compression release? And where's the best place to get one. Ill throw a headlight kill switch on there also.
