Early Dog - 2001 Pro Sport running really rough / wierd issue

Hello all- finally got my tins back on the bike and fired her up for a test ride. In short, bike runs great until it warms up and then it runs like a lawnmower. both cylinders firing but the "crispness" is gone and it runs stumbly, sort of like running a very bad tank of gas. It idles ok but the idle cadence is different once the issue pops up. When bike is cold the idle is very perfect and "lopey" as it should be with the 600 cam. giving it part throttle or full throttle makes no difference. I have fiddled with air / fuel mix and it is not that.

I have checked all the usual suspects- getting spark, no intake leaks or leaks around carb, voltage is good from charging system, pulled bowl on carb / checked all jets, float level, fuel delivery system is good, carb adjustments etc...

In looking at the plugs, they are on the whitish side on the insulator but not indicating lean condition (new plugs only have a few miles on them tops). Electrode is tan. the plugs smell a bit gassy but very faintly, plugs are not black or sooty so not indicating rich either. both plugs look equally the same.

Bike has 3800 miles on it and it ran very strong before I had it sitting for 2 months while tins were off. previous set of plugs showed perfect burn on both cylinders. it had an older G carb that was slightly under-jetted with the fixed air bleed, and was rather notchy on part throttle so I bought one of Bob's XXX carbs.

Stuff I have done to bike while it was sitting:
All new fuel lines
changed all fluids
Pingel high flow petcock
New Landmark vented gas caps (yes I checked the vents- all good!)
New dual dyna coils, new NGK plugs and Twisted wires
Recently re-lined tanks (professionaly done)
New XXX carb (32 intermediate jet / 76 main jet / 060 main bleed / 040 intermediate bleed

Bike is direct wired with no EHC, wire connections are all good, fuses / breakers are all good - Bike has a Crane HI4 unit (Crane unit is at least a few years old) - set to Race Mode, 1/2 way on advance, -2 for rear cylinder

I can reproduce the issue by letting the bike warm up for 3-5 minutes.

Any ideas? Maybe failing cam sensor on the HI4 module? My TP motor has the cam sensor in nose cone. This is killing me. :bang:

I would have to lean towards the XXX carb.
That was the main thing you changed after it was running good.
I would highly recommend calling Bob and getting his input.

not plugs- put back in the old champions / no change
carb not sure yet- the very first test ride i did for 1/2 hour went perfect. I rode it down to fill up with fresh gas, then rode it home, bike was very well warmed up and not a single issue, maybe a 10 mile round trip. then an hour later I went for another ride, got about 10 minutes out, and the issue started. since then the issue remained consistent when bike is warm. with my limited knowledge, if it were carb the problem should have been there from the start with the very first test ride?

the vent bowl screw is removed from the carb.

Could it be the gas? You said it ran perfect before you filled up

well it ran back home good after the fill up, and it runs good cold for the first few minutes- wouldn't bad gas cause rough running regardless of cold / warmed up?

Bad gas was my initial thought also....easy/cheap enough fix to try at least to eliminate the possibility.

OK so I gave up and called my friend to come pick it up- I was planning on riding it over to him for final once over and tuning. I'd be dicking around with it for days at this point and I'd rather let an expert work his magic. I will let you all know what I find out.

I've had bad gas in a bike before and it's been my experience that it runs like crap consistently- cold or warm. this seems different to me. The big-twin sensei will let me know...

It's really been a rough couple of months since buying my Dog, one pesky thing after another has kept me off the road. I'm ready to at least enjoy some RIDING between downtime.. ;p

I was going to ask how the new tires were working out.I was going to do some work to mine including the XXX Carb but I am thinking I should just let it alone and wait for the snow to melt and start riding it again.Good luck hope its no too serious.

The tires are fantastic. IMHO there is nothing better to put on, very smooth riding and sticky. no wandering or pulling. plus they look really nice with the tread pattern and sidewalls.

Looks like my intake manifold seals were toast. Got the bike up and running yesterday, properly dialed in with timing, carb and it is a damn rocket!

But... damn it.. the Crane ignition started screwing up last night so bike is down AGAIN. I am putting in a new ignition today- Twin Tec.

ok so after fixing all of the obvious stuff and still having the issue.... the motor is toast. looks like something in the bottom end is coming apart. scale-size metal bits in the oil, steel pieces. maybe a crank bearing or something. but anyway, the motor is effed. Pulling motor and cracking case open today. so much for an easy fix.. this is worst case scenario. and with only 4k miles on the bike..
