Dunlop Elite 3 Radial rear tire

I just got a Dunlop Elite 3 250/40 R18 for the Bulldog. I handled everything except the mounting of the tire myself. Upon installing the rear wheel with the new tire, I found that the tire was slightly wider than the Avon I was running before. The clearance at the belt was ZERO. After bitching about tire manufacturing standards, I decided on a course of action. I removed about an 1/8" of rubber where the tread and sidewall meet with a Roloc. I then chalked the edge of the tire and checked the fit again. The tire rides much smoother than the Avon, and there are no clearance issues now:up:.

I thought I'd share this in case anyone is considering the Dunlop rear tires. If this tire continues to perform well, I may opt for the 240 series next time. The published overall width of the 240 is 9.29 inches vs. 10.02 with the 250. My total cost for the tire, mounting and balancing (3 oz. dyna beads) was less than $200 (Thanks to Lee at Extreme Cycles in Griffin, GA). I hope this is helpful.

I ran the Dunlop Elite 3 250 on my '05 Chopper and got about 10,000 miles on it! Loved the way it looked and road, but I didn't care for the clearance issue as they are a tad wider than the Avons. May reconsider though now that I know about the "widdling" down of the width.

The Dunlop is a motorcycle tire.. its what comes on the Rocker and Vrod -i am pretty sure . i looked into that tire also... but fiitment issues scared me away...

The Avon only had about 6000 miles. The tread was not worn out, but one of the belts was broken. This was due to a flat that was caused by a screw. My point is, there's no accurate comparison here. The Avon on mine was a Venom. So I'm not sure about a Cobra. As far as pictures, I'll get some when I get a chance. There are pictures of the tire on the Dunlop website if you're interested.

Cobra is just the new replacement for the Venom.

For comparison I get 20,000 out of mine except my third one which only had 500 miles on it before a blowout on the highway.

Just chiming in----not that it is the same scooter, but I have installed Elite 3's on my Gold Wing. They are on both front and rear. Also, the Wing is 99% of the time ridden two up. The only reason I bought the F--king thing. Now, Wings have problems with the tires chopping abit, + these sure are. I am not sure if I would purchase them again. I have about 7k miles on them. They will go a distance + I like the tread pattern. The Dog needs skins. I may just go with the Meztlers 880's again. I have had Avons before. Never got good tire life from them. Curious how the Elite 3s' live. This is just my two cents :zz2cents:. Keep the Rubber Side Down. :up:

I have an 04 Pibull with that rear tire no clearance but no rub on the belt...what an awesome tire...Will stay with the Dunlop Elite 3.

I have the elite III on my 04 ridgeback front and rear. No clearence issues.
