When perusing the threads, I thought I saw that it was to be torqued up to 60lbs. Secondarily, to get a socket on it, would I have to bend up the keeper tab on the outer washer? No more than 8 foot pounds of torque or you will snap the bolt....put a something over the gear like a couple of rags so not to scuff it up with pliers
Since that bolt if I recall is 1/4" even a grade 8 bolt is only 12ft/lbs of torque typically, grade 5 is 8ft/lbsWhen perusing the threads, I thought I saw that it was to be torqued up to 60lbs. Secondarily, to get a socket on it, would I have to bend up the keeper tab on the outer washer?
Yes you have to bend up the tab to get a socket on it....just use a flat head screwdriver and a small hammer and gently bend the tab up....When perusing the threads, I thought I saw that it was to be torqued up to 60lbs. and 5 ft/lbs is 60 in/lbs which may have been where you got the 60 from.Yes you have to bend up the tab to get a socket on it....just use a flat head screwdriver and a small hammer and gently bend the tab up....
No sir its just a 1/4 20 bolt.... 5 to 8 foot poundz or 76 inch pounds.....
That's where the confusion was. Thank you!and 5 ft/lbs is 60 in/lbs which may have been where you got the 60 from.
Don't you have to bend the tab DOWN so you can get a socket on it and UP to lock it against the side of the bolt head?
Uh, both caps are made to come off. One is righty tighty the other is righty loosy.New question for all of you knowledgeable fellas. What, if anything, can be done about the REALLY long stops at the gas station? I'm not talking about the frozen burritos either. It takes forever to fill up the pitbull. The split tanks where only one has a filler, so I have to wait for it to slowly trickle to the left hand tank.
I'd love to know what you guys have figured out.... I'm planning on doing a solo Iron Butt Association ride with her soon and it would be great to not have to stop for 20 minutes at every fill-up.
Well that makes me feel smart. Although, I just went to the garage and the left side isn't budging. I definitely always thought it was a dummy cap. I'm guessing it's stuck in there now since it's never been removed.Uh, both caps are made to come off. One is righty tighty the other is righty loosy.
Or a rubber strap wrench..... If you have the OG Landmark caps, its prolly the swelled plastic gas cap threads that are locking it in? They swell from the ethanol in the gas. Once out, a little sanding on them will help. Or new caps?Sounds like someone may have tried to unscrew the left cap and succeeded in making it even tighter. You might try using one of those rubber jar opener things that women use in the kitchen, and turn the cap in the direction that normally would tighten one. (it worked for me )
Can anyone tell me why they do this?Just remember that the left tank cap unscrews to the right. I posted a picture of the old style (r)& the new (l). When you get it out you can order the new style from BigDog or sand it down like HMAN said. My old ones looked like shit so they had to be replaced.
That’s the question of the day! No idea here. Glad the guy I bought the 2000 Vintage Sport from told me that shit. Can anyone tell me why they do this?
Well, the non vented cap usually goes on the left side while the vented cap can let the right side drain. Cant mix em up this way.Can anyone tell me why they do this?
