Dreaded starter bang

Is the occasional bang heard from the starter caused by starter bendex wear and corrected by purchasing a starter or has anyone personally rebuilt one? Does this eventually knock a tooth off of the ring gear?

check the housing for cracks. Mine made the bang just a couple times and the housing was cracked. There's quite a bit I=on info on starters on here/
Agreed. I've broken two starter housings and they prob get twisted a bit when they start cracking.

I think personally I had problems with PDM and the compression release wiring (not always fully compressing them, thinking low voltage) which was causing the kickback on the starter which cracked the housings. Last one had cracks in under 2K miles and 1700 was one trip so not many start cycles maybe 40-50

Mine did it, then I realized that before I shut the engine off, if I put the bike up into neutral, then go back into first, and put it back into neutral again, it NEVER bangs. If I don't do that, its hit or miss.

Take if for what its worth, but its working for me.

Agreed there is no better chance of you aligning it correctly do first than neutral than when you turn it off.

When you put it in gear and move the bike you ain't moving the starter ring and when you slip it back in neutral it's in the same spot. You might move it 1/16" an inch at most since there is a hair of play. Remember you would have to move the primary chain and pistons to actually move your starter ring in gear since its all one unit.

The starter gear is angled and notched to slip into the ring gear regardless of positioning. Where it gets hung up is on busted starter teeth. You might have luck sanding the burs off the teeth. The metal on the starter is much harder than the metal on the ring gear. The ring gear is cast on our BDM which is a weak part, that's why we all replaced our carriers.

I was just playing with the transmission last night on the bench and I've heard of this old wives tail before and your odds are no better than rolling the dice.

I never leave it in gear. Impossible to get it back into neutral. Plus if I'm worried about it rolling, that's what the big granite curbs are for. Everyone has there way of doing it. I'm not a fan of the starter banging.

I learned about this from one of the techs at S&S back when I first got my chopper. Mine goes into neutral every time by giving it a bump in RPMs, then lift up on the shifter. Then click it back into first, and do it one more time. No banging of the starter after doing that.

I'm not saying this is the only way to do it. It works for me.

Shouldn't have any issues with engine off finding neutral. If that's the case there's an adjustment that you need to make

No problem finding neutral with the engine off on both the dog and Harley but impossible when running unless rolling up to a stop. I wonder if it's a linkage adjustment or a trans adjustment. I've never messed with trans except to pull them out or put them in...

I rebuilt the mechanical side of it but had my friend do the electrical side. The jackshaft isnt hard to replace at all and only requires standard hand tools. You can get the jackshaft from a car starter or alternator shop. I had them rebuild mine a couple times and I was able to get the jackshaft number and ordered my own.

five bikes, can find neutral on all except bigdog. when running.
the throw from first to second is too short for my old aged foot.
not a problem , I always find neutral just before coming to a stop.
I know it is because of the clutch dragging a little but not worth the time to try to fix it

When you try to put the bike into neutral you go from a gear into neutral so you would have the clutch pulled in so how could it be dragging? ? I don't understand what you mean.... I can get neutral right before stopping but once stopped it's all over.
