drain plug port stripped.

My primary drain plug port is stripped , when I bought it had a hd softail drain plg in it with pipe threads , it doesnt tighten and I get a drip. I tried teflon tape and still get the drip.

I since read the right plug is a 3/8 24 thread by 5/8 long so I tried one and still doesnt tighten, anyone have a easy fix or any ideas will be appreciated

Drill and re-tap to the next larger size is the way to go and the most reliable

or you can take your threaded plug down to your local plating shop and ask them to put .0005" of zinc plating on it ... let them know that you want the threads built up with plating because of an oversize tapped hole

the formula for plating threads is .0005" of plating per thread flank (X-2) per side (X-2) = .002 overall plating thickness

Zinc Plating is real cheap

Quick fix would be tefflon tape. Did you use yellow? Yellow tefflon tape is for gas/petroleum and is thicker than white. If you used white, oil and gas will disolve it and it actually acts like a wick for oil to run out. Yellow tape is available at any hardware store. They commonly use it for gas pipe fittings.

Thanks , I will try the yellow tefflon first and then call grangers and if that doesnt work I will try retaping the hole , thanks again for the tips!!!

Helicoil it (thread insert) can get it at NAPA and maybe Autozone has the size you need. You drill it to the size they say on the insert then tap it with the supplied die then apply locktight to the thread insert and screw it in. Once installed don't forget to break off the tab that you contact to twist it in with. Try not to cause anymore damage to anything else while performing this, like drilling too far or loosing the tab inside the engine.

it would be going into the primary case so it would be accessible to clean and get out any debris. :2thumbs:

I ended up buying a 1/2 inch tap and all is fine now , also rapped the new bolt in yellow tefflon tape, thanks again!!
