Downshift into second problem - Ideas?

Searched through the forum and haven't found a solution to this yet -- that and I pretty much know crap about transmissions.

PROBLEM:
- downshifting from 3rd into 2d often results in 2d not engaging and it sounds like the gears are floating near each other--could be the sound of the shift dog maybe
- downshifts normally if I give it some throttle and let the clutch out fast (makes for some excitement getting the timing down)
- shifter pawl adjustment seems fine, but I checked it without taking the cover off.
- shifts into neutral fine
- some times, from neutral it'll only shift into first after some throttle and easing the clutch out
- all other gears seem fine
- heim joints were fine, but I re-lubed them anyway

All thoughts are appreciated ...

If everything looks cool with your shift arm and pawl, look inside the tranny. Take off the top and side covers. On top you have the pillow blocks and shift drum. Just 4 bolts and all that comes off. Inspect the drum for any wear or funny marks in the guides. Make sure the inside shift arm is engaging properly. Now out the side of the tranny you can pull the shafts that hold the shift dogs in. One should slide right out, the other is behind a large allen grub screw. Before you slide them out, make note from the top of which dogs go where. Two are gold, two are black. No two are shaped alike and they should be stamped with numbers. Take them out and look carefully at the contact points. If they look scorched or discolored, time to change them. Look down in there for anything unusual or any metal. When you put it back together, make sure the dogs are riding in the drum properly, it will only tighten down again one way, but sometimes it's a little tricky getting it back on right. I'm pretty sure Baker has a manual on their website that can help you out more.

chacha,

For what its worth, I am running the Karata (dry primary) but experience the "floating" you described in the clutch gears every once in while if I try to downshift at a rolling speed that is just a bit too high for 2nd gear.

It's just a thought - like you, I know crap about transmissions - hope you get it figured out.

Dingo -- thanks. You may be onto something there. I tend to roll down early, so I'll try that out for a couple of days.....

Yep -- noticed that downshifting above 22mph results in it floating. Anything below that it drops right it.

Not too many open primaries around here, so not too many people to ask about it.....

Trans down shifting

I had this same issue and was able to get it straight with a shifter pawl adjustment. My trans started doing it again for the 3rd time and soon after blew up. I was running the Red Line fluid and the tech seemed to think it was part of my issues. This was the 3rd trans that he had seen with the redline come apart. One of my gears broke in half inside the trans causing major issues as you can imagine. Baker is now reccomending Spectro 6 speed 75w 140. Red Line has been foaming and causing other issues, just what I have read and experienced myself. Good luck.

Whatever -- thanks for the background. I think the pawl adjustment is OK, but I'm going to check it with the top off the next chance I get. I'm running Amsoil in there now, but ran Redline in it before the rebuild this winter.
