Dog left me stranded today

I was cruising down the road happy as a clam when I noticed the speedo/tach sort of freak out (tach lights flashing, then back to normal, etc.), but then the bike continued to run ok. Another 5 miles down the road it completely shut down on me. It lost all power. Pulled over, checked cables, check battery (battery is newer) and everything seemed snug. When I turned the key back on it had nothing, no lights, no click, nothing at all. No lights on the stock EHC or anything. Called the tow truck and headed home with it in tow.

Any ideas? I'm too slow to try and fix this myself so I'm hoping to get in the shop first thing Monday as I was planning on leaving for Sturgis Wednesday morning and am a little worried I won't make it now.

I agree my 05 mastiff was shutting down while going down the road it would just loose all power like someone cut the switch off I could turn the key a few times and restore power but it woldnt last so I wired in a toggle switch to make sure the switch was bad and havent had it happen again so I have a new switch Im going to back on it

Check your battery for voltage, check cables, and also check your ignition switch.
Been there except mine never quit running completely, the exact same issues, flashing tach, speedo bouncing around, sputter , sputter, then fine for 10 miles or so,,, then again the same thing,,,,, praying to make it home the entire time!!! and made it home,, thank God cause it was one of those really hot days a while back.

This is what I found was my problem. I do have the wire plus and new iginition switch on my scooter. After checking battery, connections , wingle test,,, getting frustrated:bang:,,I found a wire that the crimped connnection had came apart on,, when I touched it it completely came apart..

Recrimped everything heat shrinked everything again ,,,, no issues since!!

Voltage is 12.8, all cables seem good and snug, kink free... I'm gonna start looking closer at any other wiring, but I'm about as useless as an ashtray on a motorcycle so I doubt I'll figure anything out with it. Ignition seems to make some sense since it doesn't seem to do anything when I turn it on and off so maybe it is the switch? Crossing my fingers myself or Fury Motorcycle can get me going before Wednesday afternoon either way... Thanks for the pointers so far guys!

Samething happend to me once turned out the screws that hold the harness plugs in the EHC broke and let the plug backout enough to lose connection.Hope everthing works out for you.

Sounds like the EHC module is going out. I'm having similar schizophrenic issues with my '08 Pitbull. Search on either EHC, or the replacement options: Wire-Plus (WP) or BDM's PDM retro-fit module. You will see that this are symptoms of the stock EHC going out.

Either buy or borrow a known good battery before you go EHC shopping....I agree with Ray....could be as simple as a batt...

Agree. A $120 battery is better than a $5-600 EHC replacement! Let's hope that's all it is, but don't be surprised if not.

Also, you may want to check your main fuse/breaker under the seat. With no lights coming on at all, you may have blown it.

That main fuse/breaker was where my connection was lose, as long as I held the wire in there kinda tight everything was fine,,,, wiggle it just a little bit,,, all the weird symtoms,,

hope you get is fixed,,, I know how it bugs the crap out of ya while you are trying to sort through this things. I/ We feel your pain,,

Tried a new battery, but no luck...

When pulling out the old one as I was removing the cables from it, I noticed the tail lights come on when I wiggled the positive cable from the EHC harness. This happened without the key on. With the key on it still stayed on. The power on light on the EHC came on, when I hit the run button, it went to a a different light, this time red. Tried to start it, but it wouldn't even roll over. Finished pulling the battery out and tried the new battery. Same thing(s) happened with that one. Again, when I'd wiggle that positive cable coming from the EHC harness, I can get some power to the bike whether the key was on or not. Didn't seem to matter if any other of the positive cables were hooked to it or not...

I'm bummed as I was so looking forward to riding it out to Sturgis this year!!

Thanks for all the ideas so far... I was hoping it wouldn't be the dreaded EHC.

Its the EHC just get you one from wires plus and be done with it. Peace of mind goes a long way.

Fury confirmed Saturday it was the EHC. Sucks 'cause the means the bike is probably done for the season as I can't afford the $1700 bill Fury wants for the wires plus and installation. I don't have enough confidence in myself to even attempt this job on my own. The good lord just didn't bless me with those abilities.

Sorry to hear it happened, and then prior to Sturgis. I have never done one so I can't give any advise. Do any of your friends have the confidence?

Does the ignition need to be swapped out during the Wires Plus install too? Or is it recommended to?

You will need the wire plus kit and the new ignition switch for about $500. Do not buy the quick disconnect plug for the ignition switch. The pins are too small for the high amp wires. I felt the same way you do. The hardest part is cutting the first wire. After that you gain more and more confidence with each new wire. With Jakes 64 page full color instructions and a full day you can do it. It took me 9-1/2 hours start to finish and that was 2500 miles ago. Find a friend that will help you and the both of you can get it done.
