Dog died, won't fire up

I took my 05 Ridgeback out yesterday, everything seemed o.k but i did notice more popping from the pipes, about 20 miles into the ride it just shut down. When i got it home i checked battery voltage was at 12.84, i have spark at the plugs, when i turn on the ignition and hit the run button the red light comes on steady, when i hit the start button the yellow power up light blinks for a second then stops. The bikes turns over fine i got spark and fuel, but it just wont fire up. Anyone out there had this problem your feedback and possible remedy would be greatly appreciated

interesting one if you have spark and fuel - the missing ingredient would I guess normally be compression - have you checked for cranking compression?

The other thing I can think of is ignition timing i.e. you are getting spark but at the wrong time - could check your crank position sensor

I'm afraid I know nothing about electrics - do not and cannot understand it

others will chime in soon

you say you have spark and fuel. is that fuel in the tank or fuel in the carb? could be the in-tank filter/strainer is clogged.

I have not done a compression check yet, i might not get a true reading because of the automatic compression releases. I did check the lights on the side of the ignition module. i have a solid red till i crank the motor then the red light flashes along with the blue and green. i've been leaning towards the crank sensor being bad, i just want to cover some things first. I also am getting fuel from the tank so that is not an issue.

without trying to labour the fuel thing too much what do you mean by getting fuel from the tank? are you getting fuel through the carb? with your air cleaner removed you should be able to see if you zip the throttle

I agree. Start with the simple stuff first. Clog at the tank. Debris in the carb/jets.

Not to be a smart ass but are you sure you have gas in the tank. I ran the bike out one time and it took me a little while to figure it out because I was ableto lean the bike back and forth and I would have sworn I could hear fuel slosing around.

Yep, i got plenty of fuel in the tank and i'm getting fuel through the carb also, i checked the jets they are not clogged at all, cleaned them anyway checked the carb all seems fine. Sometimes when i spin the motor over i do get a pop here and there like it wants to fire, that's why i'm almost leaning towards the crank sensor. Also, yesterday i was getting a good amount of popping through the pipes a couple of minutes before it shut down, it also seemed it was down on power a little bit not much just a little. thanx you guys for your feedback

Check the crank sensor... and try one more thing... just cause you say you have fuel and spark.

Check the plugs or even replace them. Champions are cheap and it eliminates one potential problem.

Get a spray bottle with KNOWN good gas. With the filter off the bike... when cranking it, spray gas into the carb. If it starts and dies... you may have bad gas.

The red light when you hit run is the EHC turning on the ignition. THe yellow when you push start probably is the EHC activating the compression releases.

Also, did you check both spark plugs for sparky?

I have even gone as far as cranking the engine over a couple of times with the plugs out to make sure that if there was any fuel sitting in there that it would blow it out. Once I did that and replaced the plugs with new....all better. :2thumbs:

Gas,
Not to be smart but the blue light is the compression releases. The yellow is power up.

And do you use or have you tried to use your enricher?
Gas,
I forgot and left my enrichener up once. Should have known been running SS carbs since 1982. Did the exact same thing he describes. It would have fouled the plugs if i would have not dropped it back down after the stuttering.

Well, i got fresh gas in it, the plugs looked good, but i put new ones in anyway, i do get spark to both plugs, i did get it to fire up for about a couple of seconds it really sounds like it's out of time, i pulled the crank sensor out and it looked good no cracks or debris on it, i'm thinking that the sensor might be bad, i checked the connection all is good there also

I did a compression check tonight, i got 160 psi for both the front and rear, so i got enough to get this thing to fire, i'm gonna change the crank sensor, i do know they do weird things when they go bad, and for the bike to quit running so fast and the only thing was more exhaust pop then normal right before it quit
