Lee,
If you have broke two of the four screws on the EHC (not hard to do and it is even mentioned in my BDM SM to be careful), there is a good chance that you are not getting a solid connection through the EHC.
I would very careful remove the 50 pin connectors from the EHC and look at all the pins on the EHC. Check to make sure that oen is not bent or worse broken. Check and re-check. The look at the female matching holes in the 50 pin connectors to make sure nothing wrong there.
If everything is good, you can replace the screws that hold the connectors to the EHC. The black plastic covers come off the connectors allowing one to get to where they can replace the screws. You will also want to make sure that what is left of the screw in the EHC are removed. May have to get some precission pliers, tweezers, etc to remove. May even be better to pull the EHC out so that it can be worked on the bench.
Now finding the proper screws to replace to hold down the connectors to EHC could be fun. You can try an electronic shop or even see if you can salvage some from a computer cable such as printer. If you can find some that fit, but that are too long, make a little spacer to place between the screw head and the connector shoulder.
I tell you this from experience by the way!
Good luck
