do i need a new speedo ?

I road my bike earlier today everything worked fine. went back out for a ride and everything works on my bike but the speedo .I noticed when i turn on the key the speedo goes up to 60 but then after the bike starts the needle doesnt sweep again .I do wait for it to sweep first time before starting .when i do start it and the needle sweeps after starting everything works fine.If the speedo is not working my trip odometer will not change over from the mileage .I checked voltage ,battery and charging all is good ... ?????

Check the connector at the tranny. Clean it and put some dielectric grease on it. See if that fixes your issue.

Pull the sensor, and wipe off the magnet. medal will stick to it and mess with the reading

Mine did the same thing got a Dakota digital no worries since works and looks great

Lots of ours have done that. Just died for no real reason. Mine was odd in that it would show a speed if you were sustained (like 65 on the highway) but it wouldn't change the miles. Still swept, something goes bad in them I guess. Try cleaning your sensor on the tranny but from what I've read it takes a LOT of gunk to mess with the reading. Honestly for $250 the dakota digital looks so much better and has so much more functionality that it's worth it just to swap it and go on with life.

Found my loose connection in the speedo housing. Pulled all the connections and put dielectric grease in them. To honest your speedo is just one bounce away from crapping out. Get a dakota and problem solved.

I had the same problem. It worked intermittenly and then finally crapped out. Installed a Medallion speedometer.

crack it open....check the red power wire. Mine was broken. Found a great how to on here. Fixed it myself for under 15 bucks...for the solder iron.

is the magnet the round ring that looks like a spacer between the housing and the bracket?

back in the day, BDM came out with a "fix" for that situation by performing a flash on the EHC to do a second sweep of the speedometer due to the massive draw on the battery during cranking. this second sweep was done after the bike was running and charging. your bike may have never had the service bulletin performed. mine wasn't due to a corrupted program and it occurs when it has been sitting a while even on the tender, so what i do is ride a couple miles, turn it off, and crank it back up. most of the time, it starts working. next step is to replace the EHC or do a rewire.

Mine started doing that as well. I pulled the speedo apart, checked wires, put dielectric grease on connections, didn't fix. Then my flashers would start blinking after firing her up. Here's the surprise......all these electronics are so touchy, that when I replaced my battery with a new Tomiaka, it fixed everything! My old battery was 4 1/2 years old, but was still showing 12.8 volts with key on and holding 14.2 while running, but it was just weak enough to screw everything up. There's my two cents worth.
