Disappointed

Hey everyone,
I took the chopper out for the first time. I had to put a new speedo on it that I got from Curtis. I made sure all the wiring from the Connectors to the speedo/tach were good. The bike runs great , and everything was good up until I hit 40 miles per hour , Then the speedo deem to lose power and go to the mid-range position and the Tach also would act like it was losing power . If I dropped below 40 miles an hour it would return to normal. My question is has anyone experience this ? Where would you start o track down what the problem could be?
Thanks for any advise

Tach and spedo both at the same time is probably a power problem. The 40 mph indicates that it is load related due to vibration. I would look at the key switch. If you have stuff hanging from the key remove it. It sounds like it is loosing connection and interrupting power to the EHC and then the tach and spedo. They due a reset on startup and also on power interruption. The switch is on the coil cover and upper motor mount. It is a harsh enviroment. Locktight and retorque your upper mount and coil cover bolts and if the mph changes your in the right spot. Check the battery connections.

I Will check those things , but , if I was losing power to the EHC wouldn`t that effect the running of the bike. The bike runs great at all speeds. No signs of a problem. I will check those things. I was wondering if the speedo and Tach have a common ground wire to it?

Sometimes it's just good to remove gas tank and go through every connection and put fresh di electric grease and re tighten everything you can find even when bike is running good. Just good pm jmo

While you have the tanks off, double check all wires for chafing. You may have a wire with the insulation rubbed off and grounding at certain vibration levels.
I was thinking the same thing. One of my buddy's Harley was cutting out at certain speeds, and it turned out to be a ground connection that became "bad" at a certain vibration levels. :oldconfused: It was a real pain trying to narrow it down because it only did it at certain RPMs. :yesnod:

I cleaned and replaced the speed sensor. I check the charging system , all is good there.I started taking the wiring a part and man what a mess. There are so many little wires running all over the place, I don`t know where to begin. As my original post states , It is the speedo/Tach that i`m having an issue with. Does anyone have an idea where I should start?

The speedo and tach DO have shared power from the "stupid box" for sure.
I have had the same problem till I ran a new power wire from the box, different
terminal. Just so they were powered with the switch, so far so good.

Could you give me an idea of how to do what your saying to do. Give me some pictures if you can. I don`t know what the stupid box is. Thanks

It's called the EHC....Electronic Harness Control, it's the root of all evil electrical problems with the Big Dog's

My 06 K9 is acting crazy, new to forum and really need input. Bike not turning over, Batt showing it's charged, it's not getting juice to the solinoid/starter but when i hard wired it she turned over. Other day the left blinker stayed on for about 3mi, then Speedo stuck at 30mph, today RPMs would not read. Put bike on charger all night and she turned over. Also about 2wks ago the speedo went black and BOTH blinkers stayed on for about 3minutes, then SPeedo came back on blinkers went off. headlight acting goofy too, only hi beams or NO light. Totally think it's the EHC, need info on this RIP kit from Wild Steed Worx. It's riding time up here in IA and I really want to get this fixed, thinking of pulling EHC and sending in to be tested, do i just get a new EHC from Wild Steed Worx or what??? My email is coreywoodyard18@gmail.com, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Also I pulled the tank off last night, checked all wires, only one had anything that looked remotely sketchy, put heat shrink on. Batt terminals tight too.

More than likely and very well could be your EHC. What I would do first is get a new battery. Then check all your connections ground wires especially. Use dielectric grease on all connectors. Then go to the introduction section and do a proper intro pup.

Funny, but follow all of the problems posted on this site. Say what you want but 10 out of 10 times when folks finally replace the EHC and quit coating their bikes with dielectric grease, their problems magically go away......just a coincidence, I'm sure. If you want to, run a survey of people's bikes which have magically been fixed when the EHC was eliminated. I may be a knucklehead but I'm a knucklehead who no longer has to spend all my time trying to fix electrical problems. 12 years without one issue, 2 years (prior to rewire eliminating EHC) during which I had to buy a trailer to haul my bike back from regular breakdowns. What a dummy I am!

Say what you will, but this sounds like a bad battery. With original electrical harness and controller, you MUST keep them on a battery tender. Now if you are not getting the battery charged enough, it may be your VR or stator goin out? Just throwing money at the EHC aint the answer. Just my .02

:agree: There are a few that are still running the EHC, but there are many more that have replaced it, and the ones that find this site and join are the one's seeking a fix to their newly purchased Big Dog. I have personally changed mine out for the ESC and have been trouble free also because I was having problems.
