I'm on my second 08 K-9 both fuelies.

On my first one I had upgraded to the Dakota Digital Speedo and was initially planning to do that to this one as well (already even bought the unit)

However, There are some information that I'd like displayed that isn't available from that unit, so I am looking to do one myself (yes, I am an electronics geek)

I started playing with the idea to get a gas gauge and expanded and have found some working designs already on the net.

My question for people here, is what would you like to see on the unit.

I'm looking at displaying the following , not neccessarily all at the same time


SPEED
Odometer
Trip A
Trip B
Date/Time
Gallons of fuel/Current MPG/ Miles left til empty

Options I am considering adding

Charging status (Amps) Maybe Voltage
Oil Pressure, Oil temperature

Ambient temp/wind chill temp

GPS location (and tracking/logging) with option for cell phone built in to call you if bike moves, provide exact location etc. (like lojack)

tilt/motion sensor - alarm -- page you if bike is stood up!

MP3 player/Bluetooth.

I am also considering redoing the tach lights and adding some more granularity (more lights/rpm)

The unit will likely be a rectangular box arced on top, or maybe still just round haven't gotten that far yet.

I like the idea of the fuel gauge - since I have a carb - i would be shit otta luck on that feature

Forget the temp gauge,had one on my 8th Streetglide and it was never right

No not really -0- AI am working on a design for carb bikes as well. I have a BMC 918ST that has no gas gauge that I need to correct.

was it digital or analog -- I'm pretty sure I can get it close.

I like the idea of charging status and a different tach in the gauge. Keep us updated

cool idea. I had similar thoughts except I want to use a smart phone. Much of the technology is already there. We would need a conversion unit to digitize all the analog sensors and inputs.

I have my phone attached to my bars now for map/gps and for MP3/bluetooth to wireless headset.

That is certainly do-able -- The problem I am trying to avoide with that route is readablity in bright daylight.

The way to do the phone as display is setup the microcontroller (arduino) and bluetooth or wifi the data to the phone and write a small app to display info.

Sound like you need a car ......................not a bike.

Very good! The phone would be a display for bike telemetry and all features that are native to it, GPS etc.

My Note 3 with 5.7" display does well in sunlight.:up:

Don't think so

I put more mileage on my k-9 every year than I do my car and when you consider I'm in the northeast that's not to bad. I have been averaging apprx 15K miles a year on the Dog. Averaged over 10K a year on previous bike.

I just need all the information to be prepared, where to get gas, when to replace battery etc.

Now I admit some of the opions seems a little over the top but when you consider that many of us listen to music on long runs the mp3 player doesn't sound like a bad idea, and for long trips the GPS (which I use to tell me about turns I PLANNED not the gps route, that too isn't bad)

GPS is a tool -- it is not something that I follow rigidly. But in mountain areas where many roads dead end with no warning it is usefull, or when you're 1500 miles from home. it's easier than carrying all the required low level detailed maps you'd need.
