Did i kill the EHC?

Hello folks,
let me describe my electrical problems. Maybe one of you can tell me what it is...
I've got a 2006 K-9 in Stock Condition. Yesterday i rode with my friends about 250miles. The dog ran quite good. Most of the trip i drove with 2000 - 2500 rpm. Then i pushed it to pass some cars to 3500rpm. Suddenly the engine went off. I tried to start again and nothing happened. Even the starter did'nt move. After a few minutes the starter worked again, the engine started and died after 5 seconds. Some more minutes the engine started and ran a few minutes before it died again. I was waiting half an hour, the engine started and i rode the dog for about 5 miles before it died again and everything started again from new. I played this game 4 times but at the end the bike drove only 1/2 mile. I gave up and trailered it back home today.
After the first stop i found out that the plus cable to the battery got a little bit loose. I fixed it but maybe that was the end for the EHC??? Or can the ignition module be damaged?

Did you gas up just before this happened? My '06 chopper did the same thing awhile back...turned out to be bad gas !!! Unfortunately, there's alot of that goin around.

check ground cables that connect to battery, this happened to me, I would be riding and bike would just shut off. I stop and with a little wait would re-start. when I looked at battery cables they seemed fine, I decided to remove battery and remove emc etc. clean connection and re-install, when I removed battery a ground cable that came from emc to battery was broken just behind the connector at battery, so it would have some contact and then move just enough so it would loose connection, I installed new end, and cleaned everything and re-installed and has been fine. I am sure it was the broken ground wire on mine.

That is a good advise, Bruce. I will remove the battery and proof all cables. I don't think it has to do something with the fuel. We were on the way with 5 Big Dog's and we filled up gas together 3 times. The other ones had no problems. And when we opened the carburator it was full of gas.
We have seen the red led light of the ehc went off and the engine stopped. I started the engine and the red led was shining, it went off and the engine died again....

I blew my EHC on a cold winter night, after constantly trying the starter over and over again. The '06 K9 (stock) has a beefier computer than my '04 and won't fry with a low batt.

I agree with a bad electrical connection, since all of you got gas from the same pump?; seems like vibration is making an intermittent connection. If you engine is starting at all, it can't be the EHC. You said that you sped up to pass someone, more speed, more vibration might of made that loose wire looser.

After a once over all all the connections under the seat, check any connectors that look bad, did you di-electric grease & shrink wrap all of them? Did you get wet the day of?

Thank you for your tips. I will check all connections and put grease into the plugs. What i thought about: Can it be a heat problem? That day was quite hot.

You want to kill a EHC, all you have to do is use a jump box! It will fry it nicely. Watched an idiot do it 1st hand. No matter what I said, he knew it all. Few minutes later we left ROT2011 for Fredicksburg TX while he stayed at the trailer at the rally site!

I bought yesterday a Wire Plus package here in germany. I will change it to the EHC and we will see in future if there are any more problems. Thanks everybody.

My EHC just went out and the dealer wants $1900 to replace with the WirePlus unit.
I really don't like spending this kind of MONEY.

Question - how difficult was it to install/re-wire the replacement unit.

Thanks

Hi Folks,
some news from my garage. Almost 3 weeks ago i got a wire plus system and wanted to fix it into my bike. I thought about it again and i decided not to do. Problem is that i live in germany and we don't have any support here for wire plus or even Big Dog Performance. What will happen if the unit has a problem? Who could i ask? USA is far away.
I looked around what the german custom bike builder use in their bikes. Lot's of them swear on the "M-Unit" from "Motogadget". It works like an EHC but is bulletproof (what i know from some guys who uses this for many miles), is as big as a package of cigarettes, very simple to install and handle and has more features than all other EHC rebuilt systems, as for example: Alarm and progammable turnlight funktion.
You can get it in USA from Spiegler USA for 320,-$

I installed it and now everything is working fine.
In mine opinion this is the best buy for your dog. Of course you have to do some wire work but you have to do with the wire plus system, too.
Some pics will follow.

Interesting. Compact, but the wire connections are too exposed to the elements.

Curious to find out what you are going to do for an ignition/ON switch replacement.

Also interested in what the plans are for the speedo idiot lights.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures.
