Good info Carlos. I might try it once my Braille dies if it every does. I am of the opinion that you either get a good battery or you don't. I had a fellow shipmate in the Navy who abused the crap out of his care battery and it lasted 10 years.:whoop:
I'm with ya Huw. I don't know why but some batteries last longer than others. I'm going into my 9th winter here in NY with the original battery in an 03 Chev. Impala. Gotten to the point where I just want to see how long it will last.

You should care about the cranking amps the battery is able to discharge. What good is a fresh 12v battery, if it is can not discharge enough power to drive the starter, engage the solenoid, turn the engine, power the headlight and light the plugs.

The fresh battery in my Kawaski would never turn over the BDM.

The load during the cold start of a BDM has to be more than 300 amps.

A battery design to discharge 465 amps should have an easier time, even as it ages (sulfonates the lead). All the Battery Tender does is keep the battery read for that first big discharge of amps. It won't prevent sulfonation.

My recent example, I disconnect the Battery Trender, roll the bike out of the garage, starts fine, ride to the bar, park on the sidewalk, security tells me to move it, bike barely turns over but starts, back to the drinks and MILFs, time to leave and the battery is toast.

Moral of the story; buy sufficient cranking amps, more is better. Replace the battery after about a year.

There's no point in comparing the life of a car battery to a motorcycle, apples and oranges. The battery in the Moto Guzzi, Kawasaki and Harley all last about one year...all on battery tends

A battery that wont do those basic functions has probably been installed by an incompetant nincompoop. But IM thinking if the battery is going to be replaced every year then IM going to replace it with a 80 dollar battery not a 157 dollar one. My 08 K9 still had the BDM 270 CCA battery in it when I purchased it, and its performance is still good. IM replacing it solely based on its age.

You don't get my meaning. Don't arbitararily replace the battery at 12 months. i say the 270 cranking amp batterys only last about a year. Its a typical battery and it have it in all the bikes.

A 465 amp battery will last longer IF it sulfonates at the same rate.

if the degradation is linear, the TR battery should last a year and a half or two years. That's still about the same value as an $80 battery.

I'm a nimcompoop for riding the K-9 on a cold night when my $80 battery is unable to discharge all 270 amps.

I would'nt classify replacing a 3-1/2 year old 270 CCA battery as " arbitrary"
Neither would I conclude that it should be replaced with a 465 CCA battery in hopes that it will last 1-1/2 years.

Hell, you guys are lucky with batteries lasting that long. Lets see:
05 -07 to many to remember
08 - battery died the day I was leaving Daytona for cross country trip back to Washington State
09 - battery died in Missoula, MT coming back from Sturgis
10 - battery dead in the middle of no where Oregon coming back from Redwood.
11 - battery dead leaving McAlister, OK on way to Florida

I've come to believe and read a lot on it but batteries have lots of ratings and one of them you don't read a lot about is "Start Cycles". A battery can only take so much and if you ride a lot it's going to wear out. Just in my case it happens at the most inopportune time!!!!! :) Still I just replace with a $100 HD battery except this last time when I could only get an Autozone model.

It's a wear and tear item so I just live with it!!!!

Raywood, I believe you are absolutely correct that start cycles can kill a battery. I also believe, sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you don't!

Your correct, its not arbitrary, its unbeleivable. No $80 270 CCA battery ever lasted 3.5 years in any BDM. Push starting doesn't count.

I would like to buy this magical battery or know the secert of making a motorcycle battery last this long.

LOL! hey and it still goes right to float charge within a few minutes of being put on the battery tender, I just dont trust it. I know how Murphy works, he'll jump dead in your ass at the worst possible moment.
My brother swears the battery in his 04' Ultra is the original battery, go figure........
