Defective Speedo

Been away for a while and this is my warning, I'M BACK.
I was out ridin my Dog, with that usual shit-eatin grin on my face, when my speedo started turnin off and on. I had experienced this problem once before a year or so ago and found it was a loose coil wire. Don't ask me why or how that could be, I just found that problem and it fixed it. But this time that wasn't the problem. Sitting in my garage scratching my head, i started looking for loose wires. I turned on the ignition and started wiggling wires, nothing til i banged on the speedo housing and hazzah, the speedo reset. I removed the speedo from the bike and found the red wire to what I thought was the light in the unit had broken off from the printed circuit board. Try getting a soldering tool into that little hole to resolder it, HA! So I did what any club fisted redneck would do, cut a sufficient size hole in the side of the speedo with my hacksaw. Soldered the wire back in place, put 5 min epoxy all over the three wires and PC board to support them, taped up my access hole and reassembled the unit to my Dog. Works perfect again and I got my grin on.:whoop:

Good for you and glad to see ya back here. We have another member that did a thread on soldering those wires back on. Early models had this problem quite a bit.

Do you still have the white faced speedo?

Yes, the white face speedo. My built 124 pounds pretty hard at low speed in higher gears, had a mirror stem break last summer. Ah the price of horsepower, hahaha

I can understand the frustration on the soldering, I had to do similar surgery a few times on a Tach Boards, but had help from my brother the first time (he is electronic type), after that I can nail a resolder on to the terminal board in a couple min.

Found it helps to have a proper solder gun with solder syringe remover, some roach clips (hemostats) and a good Demal tool to clean out the hole with a little drill of the proper size.

Them damn wires are very sensitive to breakage onto the PC Board if you are not careful. Glad you got it working!

Soldering is easy if you have the right tools and a little practice. Luckily I had a nice pencil point iron and some fine solder. I can't wait til I have the bucks to get rid of this EHC unit though, I had to run two switched 12 v fused lines to bypass the EHC for ignition and headlights.
