Took the gas cap off to fill up this afternoon and there was something that looked like RTV or caulking hanging down from underneath gas tank lip. Any idea what this could be and what caused it?

Prolly excess RTV or like material that was placed under the bung insert before installation and when tightened down it "squeezed into the inside of tank and has just now decided to fall down.

Is this something I should be worried about? Can I just get it out with some pliers?

I would. Mine had the same thing and it also still has some sort of green and grey stuff all on top of the inner ring .... but has never caused me any problems ...... well that I have blamed on it anyway!

Thats just some JB weld that has worked its way out of the paintsaver ring. Get some needle nose pliers pull it out and forget about it. happened to me about a year ago.

I've got an '08 K9 as well and the same thing. Looks more like clear coat that has peeled off the inside of the bung. I took needle nose and pulled most of it off. I look at it after each fill up and peel a little more off. I can still see some left in spots and eventually it'll loosen up and I'll get it all pulled away. Another reason to take the fuel valve off like the service manual says and clean the fuel screen that sits on top of it in the gas tank. Which I haven't done yet, but I need to. :whoop:

I have a 02 pit that did that. had to take the tank off and get it out. make sure you get all of it.
