Dead Spot

While on the highway yesterday I was running about 70 and went to pass a car and when I got up to about 3k on the tach it was like I hit a dead spot. So I backed off and I could still get up to about 85 with the tach at 3k but if I tried to give it more it seems like it doesnt want to go anymore. Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Im running the V&H big radius. I have no idea what jets im running. Everything was done at the dealer when I bought it. Dave its like it governed. It doesnt cut out per say but its like it hits a wall. Im no mechanic here so Im trying to explain this the best way I know how.

Smitty, would be nice to know if they put the jet kit in that comes with the factory BR pipes.
If you can go out again today and try to replicate your problem then downshift one gear and see what happens.

If it's too lean then it would be popping and sputtering like running out of gas.
To rich will give you the dead spot you mentioned.

Also, did you replace the S&S filter with a K&N or still running stock? Stock is pretty restrictive. Meaning you opened up the exhaust end so hopefully you are allowing more air in also by running a less restrctive filter.

Would like to know what jets are in it.

Later,
Ray

Ray I did not replace the stock air filter, but after reading your post I think I will do that tomorrow. I dont have the popping and sputtering you mentioned above. I checked my paper work and the jets that were installed were the
.076 main jet and .031 intermediate jet.

Yep, that's the standard kit and should work well with you there in your area. Maybe check your accerlator pump screww and see where it's set to.

Turn it in till it touchs the pump arm then back it out 1 to 1 1/2 turns and see how that works.

:D

Did you pull your plugs? if so what do they look like?

I also would drop the bowl and check which jets are in so you know for sure.

S&S site will let you download the carb manual for free

Smitty, you better tell us as long as you've been on here that you are NOT using that enrichener to start your bike are you?

Shame shame That could cause the symtoms you are referring to or better worded blowing out the fouled crud!!!

Nope I have NOT been using the enricher to start the bike! Dont have to much time on my hands today so I will get it figured out in the next few days.

sounds like it could be on the transition between the int and main jet. As Ray says you could try and tune that out with the accelerator pump. You could also try removing the bowl vent screw to see if that helps.

I wish I had more money.
Im with Ray on the filter. I had a problem I thought with a four wheeler one time an it sounds just like what you are talking about. May be that easy.

Don't know what air cleaner you are running for sure but I had exact same problem so removed the spike D&M air cleaner and put stock one back on, now runs great.

An accel pump should stutter briefly and then be fine. At 3k I doubt he's running out of air either. Something else is going on here.

I read it as though that is what was happening but after reading it again...

Maybe the carb isn't opening up all the way - could just be a throttle cable adjustment

I've got similar problem with my 08 ridgeback. It will easily pull in the lower gears but at 4th gear or beyond it seems like it just want pull past the 3000 rpm mark on the tach and the engine has just run out of power. Have installed a Woods cam W8 and a XXX carb but have not tuned it in enough yet to take it out and see the difference.

I had a similar problem after a new pipe and cam install. I removed my carb, sent it to Zippers and had a thunderjet installed. The third fuel circut really helped, no dead spots and pulls real strong through the entire rpm range.
