Damper Bolt - Fork Service - Stuck

Okay trying to get this damper bolt out going by GasMan's Howto. I get the allen wrench but it won't turn. I even cut the allen wrench and put it on the end of a socket and impact driver no luck.

Anyone else have this problemo?

According to the service manual it says to use an impact to get it off which is quite strange. Anyone help me out here? Only thing I can think of is putting some heat to it but the bolt is 3" inside the slider.:confused:

Service Manual States:
Using an impact wrench, remove the M8-1.25 x 25 mm damper screws (34) in the bottom of each fork leg

Clamp a set of vice grips on the end of the Allen wrench. Have someone hold the tube and lean on it. I've done it this way on several occasions and they all come off.

Try a dab of anti-seize when going back together I also put a little dab of it on the caps also. Good luck keep at it they will come out.

I know this isn't the solution but I once used an impact to get a bolt out of a 1968 BSA. I wanted to give up on it but after 2 hours it came free. This bike sat under 10 feet of Katrina salt water for a week!

Tried that no luck. I don't have an extra set of hands at the moment but the Impact should have gotten that fucker off.

I tried the other leg as well, both bolts are on there fucking good. :down:


I'm using a Harbor Freight Electric Impact granted its a bit lower power but I used it to get the Compensator Nut off so I know it's got some power. It states 240 ft/lbs but I doubt thats true...still it's gotta have 150 or so.

The service manual doesn't call for any loctite just some silicon. WTF is holding this bitch in there?

Im gonna make sure I get a new set of bolts on re-assembly so I don't have to worry about rounding out that allen head.

I'm reading torque specs on a M8-1.25 x 25 mm bolt is only 17-18 fucking foot pounds....? It says to hit it with impact again doesn't specify a torque spec. Seems excessive....

I used 16" crescent wrench as a cheater bar by sticking the allen wrench thru the hole on the end of the crescent wrench. I held the slider down with my knee. It was like monkey trying to fuck a football, :roll: but I worked. You can also try using an hammer driven impact tool to break it loose. Good Luck

I do what boo does, use a box end wrench as a cheater bar. Someone Germany torqued those in good de tight. Good for a woman bad for a screw. Sorry a screw on your bike, I mean a metal screw on your bike

I replaced mine this time and got them from HD. Rebuild kits dont come with them

Eric..dude get a "Imact driver" and put the allen tool in it...insert in the fork and smack the impact end of it with a 6PD sledge.......the impact from it will knock it loose and turn it out for you at the same time,that should work.I Hope!!!!!!!!

That's a good idea Dan. Anything to break that sucker loose. If both are stuck, I wonder if someone didn't use loctite? Hopefully not!

If you get extremely frustrated, send them to one of us to try. Just don't mess up the allen socket or you will be looking for a milling machine to drill out the remains without damaging the threads.

you need to get a real impact gun, not a toy. 240 or 150 is not much - most car wheel lug nut torque to 100 most truck 140 - my lowest impact is 750 in reverse. maybe you can go by a local shop and they will help, I think with a real impact it will come right on.

Yea - I stopped trying. Going to ShovelShot's house on Saturday to use his air to free it up.

I dont have room in my garage for a compressor so the electric was my only choice.

I agree with Bruce. Just spend the time to figure out how you can hold the tube without damaging it. Maybe two properly sized round bars through each side of the axle holes and held in place. That way you can still get the allen up through the center.

Yeah I use a 3/8 drive metric allen with my 1/2 " drive air impact using and adapter 1/2 - 3/8...works very well (650 ft lbs)...then to install, use new crush washer and some liquid thread lock on threads and I tighten with my 14.2 volt 3/8 drive impact...Done hundreds like this with no issues.

Yep - I'll be heading over to a buddies house Saturday to use proper air and I'm sure it will come loose.

But damn it - I can't believe how stuck these get.

BTW - Transmission is on it's way to your place today stopping at post office at lunch. Didn't get it packed up in time to go out Saturday. You should have it by Thursday or Friday.

mine was stuck also. I found a straight hex piece that fit the screw head and tapped the end while inserted into the head of the screw. It then came right out.
