Damn! Stripped the neck bolt..

While doing a overhaul of my front end, I got in a hurry and ended up stripping the allen bolt on the bottom tree.. How screwed am I here? i am Gunna try an easy out first. I haven't had these apart yet so I don't know how big of a struggle this bolt will be to extract. and yes I forgot to take the set screws out, real genius

Oh and not to mention, is a guy going to be able to buy a replacement bolt??

Take the set screw out. Make sure there is only one in there and not one on top of the other. I would try to get an easy out to bite on it. It should not be all that tight. Good luck.

Just looking at some prior posts for removing this bolt, I see some guys had to put heat on it.. Not good. I'll check to make sure there isn't another set screw. Good luck finding a replacement bolt I suppose??

Got the neck bolt apart. Looks like the little insert on the bottom tree that holds the bearing got a little marred up.. Is that a part I can replace too?? Hey curtis, I got my new fork tubes. The original measure 24 1/4, the new ones measure 24 1/2..when I went to screw the fork tube plug on the top it was effortless, the old tubes were pretty hard to get the plug in against the spring pressure. . How will this affect my dampening? Wonder why they are 1/4 inch longer?

I noticed the parts list and diagram I have shows two spacers that were supposed to be on either side of the preload spacer, mine didn't have these. Can a guy get spacers to take up that 1/4 inch of length with these new tubes and everything will work out the same??

The spacers are just a couple of washers. Get washers that fit the tube, throw them in and ride.
I am looking into the length issue though.

I figured they were just simple washers. The fork stop plate and the shaft cap are the parts I need to replace. I was assuming you were the one I talked to on the phone curtis?

Actually I take that back. Under further inspection, it isn't the fork stop plate that's marred, it's the inside of the bottom tree. Since I didn't remove the set screw, it messed up the shaft cap and in turn messed up the inside of the bottom tree bore. That's why the damn thing was so hard to take out,migjt be replacing my bottom tree now..

I hope u got everything fixed . I found this thread thinking i needed to replace my bottom nut also, as i just replaced my upper forks, but went back and reset nut it wasn't as bad as i thought, all seems ok the real reason im typing this i wanted to thank capt. amer. aka curtis mine turned out ok thanks capt.:2thumbs:

If you are still looking for parts I have a complete set of Trees that I took off my 2006 MASTIFF. If yours are 3 degree trees mine will work on your bike. I don't want to break up set for parts, but the set available (used but complete) and in good condition.

I haven't set my fall away yet cuz I'm waiting for my replacement parts. The set screw is just to make sure the nut (stem cap) doesn't loosen from vibrations. The stem cap is what you tighten or loosen to adjust the pressure on you're neck bearings..or fall away

Thanks for the offer too on the triple trees. curtis is sending me a new stem cap, I'm going to put it back together and see how it goes. If I need the trees I'll message you!

Maybe I am confused... Under the bottom part of the tripple tree.

dead center, there is a chrome/polished Allen head bolt. is this not what you tighten to set the fall away? or are you saying you remove that shinny one, and under it is the real one to adjust fall away?

Yes that is correct. But there are set screws that hold that Allen headed nut in Place. I might have misunderstood you.

The reason I stripped my Allen nut is because there were two set screws holding it in place. I only saw the first one!
