Today while My son (BYRDDOGG) and I were riding his Dakota Dig. speedo kept jumping back on the milage like when he would get gas and reset a on trip, it would get like to 35 and jump back to 25 and about every 10 miles or so it woulld jump back. At the end of the day my speedo said we had been 310 miles and his said 250. The speedo was right on just the milage jumping back. Has anyone seen this out of these speedo's I've not heard of it.
Appreciate any out put on this.

Mine did that too and would get all wacky when I'd jump on the gas too.

I assumed it was a loose wire or bad ground, I checked everything, but in the end was the damn ignition switch from the Wire Plus kit. I know it sounds odd, but the switch was flaking out. Got so bad at one point it would shut the bike down going down the road. Replaced the switched and it's been perfect since.

I've had mine for maybe 2 yrs+/-. (35,000 miles on bike) The bike runs fine. Just did it the for the first time Saturday. We were riding (300 mile trip) and I usually get gas every 120 miles or so but we were stoppping in little towns so had no problems. Well ran out of gas with 114 miles on trip A (trip A=gas, trip B=total milage for ride that day) put on reserve and got gas never paid much attetion to it. Yesterday rode with some friends rode to meeting place got gas check to so how far to place it said 5.7 miles should of been about 12 or 13. I noticed while riding that mileage was fine till like 12 or so miles speedo would flash ( speed read "00" like you turned key off and back on, but bike never shut down or anything)then the milage would be like 10 miles, then at 25.2 mile would flash again and go to 20 miles. On Thursday dad and I changed oil, cleaned oil filter, and I cleaned cam senser ( I think thats what it is to the right of shifter lever) The next time we stopped to get gas I unscrewed senser again to make sure it was properly installed. The mileage was fine thru like 10 miles so I quit looking, later asked dad how many he had and was off by 4 or 5 mile again. At the end of the day he had 280 something miles and I had 220 something. So I wonder if it the speedo or something else. The speedo MPH is dead on and the miles work but when it "flashes" it just the milage back. Never heard of this before so wonder what it could be.....

Sounds very similar to what mine was doing too. It drove me nuts. Thankfully when it first happened to me, I had my GPS mounted on the bike to monitor the mileage.

You could give the guys at Dakota Digital a call. I've dealt with them in the past on other bikes and they were great to work with over the phone, etc. Good luck!

What was wrong with yours? How did you fix it?

With mine it was as I described above. My ignition switch was going to hell. First a little flaky here and there, then got to the point the vibration would eventually turn the bike off. I could wiggle the key in the switch it watch it power the bike on and off.

Well sent e-mail to Dakota Digital eariler this wk and this is what I got back.

I bought one of your speedo for a 07 Bigdog K-9 a few years ago. I got a problem and was wondering if you could help me out? Last week (Thursday)while riding my speedo started flashing ( speed read "00" light on it flash off then back on) and the mileage jumped back 5 or so miles. Went on ride this weekend and when we got back my dads speedo read 281 mine read 228. Do you think it could be a problem with the speedo or something else? Any answers would be greatly appricated.

Thanks, Jason Byrd

Dakota Digital:
Jason,I would be worried about the speed sensor. The gauge is very simple with three wires, power, ground and signal. If the speed sensor does not send a signal to our gauge, it will show the “00”, and the odometer will not count up when the speed signal is lost. Did the speed come back for you?

ME:
yea the speed came back up and was dead on with my dad’s dakota digital speedo ( ‘05 Bigdog Chopper) So you think it’s the speed sensor?

Dakota Digital:
Loosing speed could be the sensor. Flashing off and on could be a power problem. If the plug has good connection I would look at the power and ground going to the gauge. Checking the source wires for loose contacts.

So I got some dio-eletric spray cleaner?(whatever dad had) and grease from my dad. Took speedo apart, sprayed and greased 2 plug in their. Took side covers off, took battery out and sprayed & greased all plugs that I seen + shrink wrapped plugs also. They were dirty as hell, never cleaned that stuff before so 5 years of dirt. Did the same to the EHC. Rode Saturday and Sunday and never happened again, so hopefully that has taken care of that.

My bike never shut off, just speedo would flash.

As stated by the rep at Dakota these speedometers are pretty simple.
I did have a customer have the led drop part of the display but overall these have been very reliable.
The customer had a new one shipped to him from Dakota right away.
Dakota's customer service is top notch and if anyone ever has a question you can call them directly at 1-800-593-4160.
The only issue I have ever had is that the demand is so high for these units there is a backorder problem from time to time.
Thanks for everyones support.:2thumbs:

I do have 2 Blue and 1 Red display in stock at this time and available on The Group Buy Page.
