Dakota Digital Speedo

Finally work out all the Gremlins from my BD PDM and the bike fired up like new. At the same time I replace my speedo with a Dakota Digital and have a question. When I started the bike the speedo would start reading 3-4 miles per hour as I increased the rpm's. The numbers/dispaly also shifted (moved around a little) as I increased the rpm's. I have not set the milage or checked the mph and will not until spring. Just concerned about the dispaly. Any ideas?

Glad you got your PDM installed. You hung in there longer than I could have. You should be proud of yourself As far as the Dakota Digital......I wouldn't think that would be right. Haven't heard of this issue before. Keep me updated as I'm thinking of putting one on my dog later on.

The movement is caused by vibration. As far as the false speed reading that sounds like a fault.

It acts like a form of RF interference to me, but not sure. It only tweaks the speedo when I rev the motor so I am pretty confident it is not a fault and coming from the ignition somewhere. Dawgboy-I have removed the word "fault" from my vocabulary after the all the issues I had with the PDM. I will have to tear into it again and isolate/insualte the speedo line from any of the ignition wires. I was hoping someone else has experienced the same and could give me plan of action. No one else has experienced this? I guess I have all the luck! Mickeewo--I will let ya know.

I did contact Dakota who offered faulty plug wires. I wrote back advising that was not the issue and the communication ended. Back the the drawing board. Has anyone here installed the Dakota the BD PDM?

I have the DD with PDM and have not any issue with it. I think Raywood also does, but not sure on that.

You did wire the DD to the three wire set up correct and not the 4 wire for the Medalion and only used three?

BTW Kudos on getting the babe up and running and salute you for the patience.

Yhea I have same thing there is a sensor on those bikes that you have to set the speedometer part then take it out for a ride and play with it a little its a special sensor just for them you need to set that correctly. I had same problem and when you push the button the black one I believe it will read to you your mileage and you control your trip set from there etc.. You will not be able to use the gas indicator unless you a floater in your tank meaning a sensor which on my bike I don't have. You have any questions your welcome to call me 732-626-2535

Yep--Three wire, not the Medalion 4-wire connection. I put heat shrink tube on those before I even started. I just read a thread from MYBIKEKICKASS (Doug) who sounds like he is aware of this issue and a fix. Not sure why DD knows nothing about it, they just keep indicating it is a RF bleed form the tach wiring or bad plug wires. Does not make any sence considering the tach surrounds the speedo and their connections and wires are in the same can. In any case, I will be giving Doug a call he sounds like he has an answer. Al

Post up what you find on this issue and I will call Dakota and talk to them.
This sounds like an isolated issue as most just install and ride with no problems.
I am sure Dakota would be interested if they are unaware of this problem
even if it has nothing to do with the their product.

You had better set the mileage soon. On a DD speedo you can only set your odometer in the first 100 miles. just a thought.

I live in east central Iowa so mileage is not a real concern for about three months. Thanks, Al

I have the exact same issue, registers 2-3 MPH when throttled at stand still, display shakes around almost like the gauge is loose but is not. I have not calibrated the speedometer yet, assume it may be related to that. Hopefully after it's calibrated it'll go away....we'll see.

DD Speedo

I do not believe calibrating the speedo will cure your issues. After looking at any and alll potemtial RF or wire bleeds I determined there was no identifiable problem. Ultimately, I disconnected the speed sensor and no my problems. I replaced sensor and it did seem to help but not a total cure. In any case I took it for a short ride and all seemed fine. Too cold to give it a real test or calibrate but I have done all that I can. BTW DD rep advised the display movement is expected. What complicated mine was I just replace the harness as well and assumed it was involved but it was not.
