While changing the oil I was pumping out the old oil and let a peace of paper towel
get sucked up into the sensor hole. Not a lot but I'm afraid to start it with out knowing where the paper could end up. Will the paper get stopped by the oil filter?

The sensor right behind the oil filter, I have to take it off to get the filter off. While I had the filter off I turned the engine over a couple times to pump out left over oil from filter mount. I had a big wad of paper towels to catch oil and forgot about sensor hole being open. From what I could see from laying out the paper towel when I pulled it out of hole it ate a strip about 1/2 wide
and 2 inches long. My thought is that it might stop up the filter for the valve train, or some other small parts or hole. Was thinking of doing a couple quick oil changes and hopefully the filter would catch it.

my concern is if its a durable paper towel.. as some are. it may not break down.. & cause a clog... if it was a small amount.. like a corner 1/4" X 1/4 "maybe it would be OK.. but that size.. well your takin a chance as some of the oil gallerys are tiny.. if it clogs a oil passage to a berring ... well your screwed.. can you look inside the hole & see it? I'd try to fish it out.. before turning it over anymore...

Well there is a plug on the bottom of the case that everyone here says do not remove could try and flush it out or fish it out.

note: keep trash out of the engine,, hope it works out.. thay sell a oil scavenger for that.. but you have to reinstall the crank sensor so it will run..

Dumb Question. Should I crank my engine over to purge all old oil from system while changing oil and filter. Took and automative class in "1968" and watched akid get his ass reamed by instructor for cranking a car engine over while changing oil.
Some lessons are hard learned but well remembered. Yea that'S 1968! Some of us just got an earlier start.

Zero. I'm not sure, but where or what part of the case is that sensor in? I think it is in the primary and reads from a wheel from the crank maybe? possibly jack up the bike and put in to gear (high) and turn wheel in reverse and see if you can see paper towel and extract it? Good luck!

It's above the front motor mount - to the right of the oil filter..

This is a tough call to make - but if it really is 1/2 X 2, you need to get it out. I assume you did not crank the motor yet - just don't see how it got sucked in..

Radam's idea is not bad - I alway have a bicycle spoke in my tool box and it has saved my ass more times than I can remember. I would jack it up, put it in 6th and have a friend very slowly move the wheel forward and backward. I would be looking down the hole with a flashlight and my bicycle spoke to see if I could hook it out. The spoke bends easily and one end (that goes on the hub) has a nice 90 degree hook to catch objects.

If it is not visible at all, then I'm with Eric - but I would get about 12 quarts of oil and flush it 3 times with a scavanger pump, looking for debris...

Yeah pknowles what they are talking about is oil scavanging, you refill the oil tank first and then crank the bike and pump the remaining dirty oil out. It is a way with these v-twins to get all clean oil in and all dirty oil out. I do mine that way, but never have had the crank sensor off at the same time, glad I know not to let that happen, sorry Zero good luck fishing tell us how your fair.
