D&M air cleaner

I have an 07 Mastiff with V&H big radius pipes, S&S shorty carb with the D&M spike air cleaner. The problem is one that has been discussed in past threads, when I am cruising around 75mph the bike seems to miss or cut out.

I changed the ignition to the Thunderheart
I upped the intermediate to 33 from 31

Could the problem be too much air flow for that speed and RPM
I'm looking for ideas here, like putting in a restrictor to block some the airflow?

I can't afford to change the air cleaner and I don't want to mount it vertical as others have done

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks
Aspen

NO Restrictor! :nono::nono::nono:

It's not getting "ENOUGH" air flow! That's been the issue with many of the single spikes.
If you want the spike look, I'd suggest the dual spike from D&M like I run, "The Boss".

I had the exact problem on my 08 pitbull with my DM Spike. I went through about 10 jet combos and nothing was solving the problem. You will find that if you run the spike vertical you will not have this issue which is fine but I did not like the look of that. After complete frustration I found the answer. It is a 5 dollar air filter cover from DM. They sell the ones that go on the outside of the spike but you can get one from KN that goes on the inside. This fixed my problem immediatly. DM told me it was a RAM air effect that was causing this. It drove me nuts until I got it figured out. Let me know how this works out.

Hi Aspen,
I had the same problem with mine, and had it turned up to the vertical position, and that solved it. I actually like the looks of it vertical.

On another note, looking forward to doing some rides when it warms up. Tell the wife I said hi. See you soon.

Another round please
Cut it off at the elbow, slide on a K&N airfilter. Thats what I did with my D&M. Works much better. Your wasting your time trying to make it work othetrwise.

I have the wimmer dual spike and had to enlarge the air bleed jet, the air bleed will change the intermediate and main jet stages in the rpm. I'm using a #36 inter, and #81 main,I might be a little fat on the main but I don't have that flat spot anymore.

never had this problem but I went all the way, with the BOSS. TWO IS ALWAY BETTER THEN ONE.

yes i did, i switched to an S&S dual runner and the problems went away, I tried several different jetting combinations with the D&M never seemed to get it right

Marty, I bought the S&S dual runner and adapter from the mechanic who works on my bike. He got it online, i honestly dont know which vender. I will say this, i am very pleased with the results.

Hey ,

I have the 2007 Bull dog fuel injected and wanted to get the single spiral air cleaner. The Parts Manager at Big Dog St. Louis said that I should not have a problem with air flow with the filter pointed forward and that has sold many with no problems.

After reading the last few post I am wondering if I should get the duel (Double the cost) to allow the proper air flow. Will my performance decrease with the single air filter with fuel injection? I would think if the performance decreases with the carburated engines it would with the fuel injected as well. Any comments or suggestions?

I would like to know if the D&M spike problems are related to the carburated engines or if the injected motors have problems also.

John, my friend has a 07 Bulldog which is fuel injected and is running the spike with no problems
