D&M AIR CLEANER ISSUES.

Ok. So how many of you guys running the D&M air cleaner, AKA Spike, have had coughs and spits too often while trying to cruise through town? Have you ever tried enlarging your air bleed jet in you carb S&S carb?

Just a thought?

some people get better results with these running them vertically. Could be worth a try.

I have the D&M spike on mine, mounted horizonal. The only time I get the cough or stumble is when I'm running 72 to 75 mph, if your slowing down or speeding up its not a problem, only when holding a constant speed. Problem seems to be worse when the air temp is cooler. During the summer it doesn't seem as much a problem. When the temp is in the 50's is does it pretty regular. I can turn the accelerator pump screw counter clockwise and this helps. Sometimes I can take the stumble out completely. I already know a lot of people hate them, just thought I would throw this out there.

I fought the problem and found a couple of solutions. First make sure you remove the plug. If you mount it vertically you it will not stumble. If you are like me and want to keep it mounted horizontal then you have a couple different options. I went up to a 32/80 on my jets and that helped but it still was screwy around 75. It is the RAM air effect causing this stumble. I ended up putting a prefilter on my filter and it solver the problem completely. Hope this helps.

I use to have mine mounted horizontally, and had the coughing, and sputtering, then mounted it vertically and have not really had any issues so far.

what rpm are you at when it does it?

Mine did that and increasing the intermediate jet fixed it.

Actually, don't know if mine is a D&M...could be a knock off. I was very sceptical at first with all the backlash these things get on and off this forum, but decided to go for it. Mounted it vertically, readjusted my carb accordingly and suprisingly(very suprisingly) got it to pull harder than my K&N filter with Desperado cover!?
Could possibly mean also that she wasn't quite dialed in before but like i said...it suprised the sh!t out of me. Plus it looks cool.:2thumbs:

Actually if you follow along with the instructions for a thunderjet a better alternative and a much better way to change your airbleed screw is to fill a stock airbleed with solder and then drill an external one.
Here's a pic of the blocked off stock screw.

And here is the external one that easy to change out and great for fine tuning, also notice the front vent has been plugged and this new one I ported on the side.

i had the d & m on mine for 2 years, ran pretty well, got tired of seein it on every other bike so i went to trotta 4in velocity stack. looks cool as hell. runs like shit.back to the drawing board

have the boss from D&M and have had no problems, even in rain and i have been caught in some down pours, you do not see many of these because they cost so much about $1200.00 on sale around Christmas, but I had to have it you should understand that, if you have a bigdog.

Bruce,

would post another picture of that air cleaner, from a slightly different angle?

The same happens with my scoot. When it starts coughing while cruising I ease off the throttle just a pinch (kind of finding the sweet spot) and the scoot cruises just fine...:2thumbs:

Reaper, I am not sure always wanted installed like I have them, I can look and tell you later if you really want to no. I keep Dog at my shop in winter months, just I case I feel like working on it.

Thanks Bruce, sure, if you can figure it out just by looking at it. I have the single mounted vertical, and it can be mounted either horizontal, vertical, or at a 45 degree angle. Thanks.
