cutting/dropping out

Bike starts fine. But can't pull itself out of the parking lot, cuts out, backfires and looses power intermitently. I can get it to go down the highway but it drops out/cuts out. Acts like I'm running out of gas going down the highway. Thought I fouled a plug, changed those already, the issue is beyond that. Is this a cam sensor thing or a thunderheart thing? OH YAH!!!! Did I mention I'm trying to have a good time at Sturgis this week........on my bike!!!!

Or maybe tank liner breaking up and blocking screen. Pull fuel hose and drain into gas can while watching flow rate. When empty, pull petcock and check screen.

Sounds like an air leak. Check to see that both venturi ports on top of the carb are plugged. (Black rubber caps) I had a cap come off and had the same symptons as you.

I had a rubber cap broke off, replaced both with new, changed out the enricher during the rally (I never pull it up anyways), both plugs, had great fuel flow at the end of the hose going into XXX carb, pulled out the little brass/copper in-let filter at the bottom of carb, and the gas cap is venting. Unfortunately after doing all the above, the problem still arises intermittently. The only thing I didn't do is remove the petcock screen and inspect. Looks like I'll have to remove the tank to complete this. Not trying to damage the paint job.

The petcock has now been removed, the screen was nasty. The screen was full little green flakes, this has to be the problem. Does anyone know how to clean out the inside of a fuel tank without damaging a paint job? Do they make a tank cleaner solvent? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Does sound like the tank liner has fell apart. I thought BDM had gone to another process after the issues with the green liner separating.
Here is a link to my thread below..fuel pump raising cane...when it happened to me and some of the post talk about a do it yourself tank cleaning systems.
My EFI bike had a plate you could remove on the underside of the tank to get to the fuel pump. I do not know if the carb bikes have this access plate as well. You can see it in the pics.

Glad I'm not the only one with this type of problem. Unfortunately there is no access to the inside of the tank other than the petcock hole and the gas cap itself on my 04 carb. Good to hear that BDM took care of your issues, I'm still trying to figure out what to do about this one.

I have been told by a person who would know, to clean the tank if you have the green liner is to use Paint Liner Removal PPG dx579 to remove the old liners.
I am sure it is a good thing to know.
