Custom Handle Bars

So, If you want new bars, the best/cheapest way to do it is have a guy make the right sized bar 1 3/8" for our stock handlebar controls then extend ( if needed ) the wiring to the new placement of the controls, then get the right length braided cables made and, you're home free.

At least, that's what I plan on doing.

Thats what I figured. Was looking to try to get away from the BD controls due to limited options and the fact that they go haywire if you mention the word rain:D

Thanks V.

Ray those are chrome steel risers that have a 1/2 hole through so the bolt barely clears so they won't shift from the bars. I bought them from Vickie when she was at the other place. I will be removing them however when I put the new front end on ,so if I don't need them and you still want to try them they're yours. Nelson I am only 5' 8" but my fooy controls are at the stock position.

What it you have handlebars made for the BDM hand controls, then have them reduced to fit standard HD controls?

The wiring harness still will not work with anything other than BDM controls.

OK, that did not come out right. What I meant was reducing the bar so you could use HD grips but retain the BDM controls.

I have had this in my mind for a few months now. I am thinking about marking my bars where the controls end, cutting the rest off, welding in new tubing so that I can use cheaper HD style grips. I would like more options when it comes to grips.

Raywood posted about some sweet leather grips that were padded on Hot Rod Biker awhile back. I would still like to get a pair for the K9.

You could cut the bars, insert a "reducing" tube ... weld that and then attach the standard grips. You'll just see a space between your grip and the BDM controls

Yeah, that was SAC. They have some great looking grips and I even emailed them telling them they are loosing out on hundreds of sales with BD owners.

You would still have to modify the grip so that the part that holds the ferals in is the right size to fit the controls. Don't know how much work that would be.

what are you going to now and do you still recommend the springer you have?

I still think the springer is a great front end. Its the caliper mount that I have a problem with, this was american suspensions third anti rotation bracket design in 2 years that alone should tell you something. I know this design has been around for a 100 years but everytime I see the caliper in front of the forks and think about the forward momemtum of the brake my ribs instantly start hurting. It also helps that the insurance company has been very generous with me and I will be going with a mean street avalon front end.

Well I really like the style and look of a good springer. Just didn't have a good experience with my Paughco springer. But that was 20 years ago and it didn't have the dampened shocks like all the news have now.

Also, I ran dual single puck Performance Machine brakes and they had a heavy bar for a bracket rather than that round threaded adjustable piece.

I have plans on building another bike, probably the BBC Screamin Demon and it will have a springer.

Al, has American Suspension done anything for you? Understand if you don't want to comment about it.

Thanks,
Ray

in refferance to bar spacers; i had a set made over a year ago from alumium stock, then polished. these were cut to the same thickness as the bars. these are 1.5" and have worked great on my k-9, with no problems at all. fyi; 6' tall with the foot control extentions and the 1.5" risers. the 5'10" and over guys love the feel and seating of the combination. several of the other BD guys i ride with have now gone to the risers on both pro-street and chop models.

No Ray they haven't done squat. I have sent them pictures, notified them of my injuries and the only response I got was from there salesman Ted who claims that this is the first time he has ever heard of this happening. Its funny because I know personally 3 people that have PM'ed me from club chopper that said they have had similar issues. The bad part is they pull the "are you a certified motorcycle mechanic" bullshit on me. So at the advise of a lawer and my insurance I will first get my bike all fixed, then the insurance company will work with me to try to get there money back and maybe a little something for me. And the bracket on this front end was a solid pc. not a threaded rod with heim joints, it wouldn't have mattered anyway because it was the bolt that failed.

Sorry to hear they are not cooperating. You might want to send a complaint to the DOT and see if they will issue a "safety recall" on them.
Forgot that it was the bolt that broke.

Good luck,
Ray

Oh I see you point now. No, it's all one piece with reservoir molded in.
When they came out in 04 I didn't like them but now I'm partial to them. Just need to get them chromed. Tired of polishing! :D
BDM sells the controls chromed, if i recall, around 7-800 bucks. Ouch.
