Hi there,

As I said in the Intro thread am following a couple of BD's over here in NZ, one in particular which is advertised as a Harley Davidson Big Dog Classic 2000. I have looked everywhere that I can think of and can only find one other BD Classic 2000 for sale so not really that much to compare with. Along with the great posts here there seems to be a re-occurring theme and that is electrics, in particular the dreaded EHC (took me about 5 minutes to find out what it is). So a few questions please:

Does the 2000 model/s have EHC's and are the electrical components really as bad as they are made out? Seems like Lucas with Brit bikes back in the 60/70's.

Does anyone here actually have a 2000 model and how do they stack up reliability wise?

Are there any problems peculiar to that year that I should be looking/asking about?

That's about it for now, thanks in advance.

I got a 2000 Husky, only had starter problems, replaced with a spike and 5k miles without any problems! at first I was a little cautious on the bike wondering if its reliable. But since fixing the starter problem I'm planning to ride it to Sturgis this summer over 1400 miles each way and feel ok to do it solo. So I guess its reliable to me!

Thanks

Thanks Bmarchant and danosrs for the quick reply. Bit of a load off my mind as I would hate to end up with something that looks and goes so well sitting in mine or a mechanics garage.

Thanks again,

No EHC in 2000, but yes, the EHC, is as bad as everyone talks about, In my opinion, it was an experiment gone bad for Big Dog, and if I had to guess, they'd like to have all that revenue back for what they have had to spent in warantee repairs as well as reputation about reliability.

Big Dog does stand by it's product, but I think if they stuck with the Thunderheart Module and a real ignition, worried less about monitoring user perfomance to which ultimately was designed to protect their interest with regard to how people rode their bikes, I'd be willing to guess that, they lost far more to the faulty EHC then they ever would have in abused motors department.

Touchy subject for me, I'm on my 4th and out of warantee for a year.

I have to Believe that most people spending 30k on a Bike would rather preserve the bike then abuse it. But hey, Sheldon Colman Didn't ask me what I thought.
