After about 350 miles on my dog since I got it. only had 3,800 on it when I brought it home. Changed fluids I trans with synthetic, and engine with synthetic, didn’t have primary fluid yet. Ride 10-15 mins and would lose clutch. Would just collapse when hot. Cool down and ok until heated up. SHIT! Adjusted and took ride, First ride home on with my Mastiff on the back of a flatbed. Ok. 2008, no mileage, let me pull apart. Maybe seal shit the bed on input shaft and leaked tranny fluid into primary. Pulled all apart and it is better than that. The 30mm holding the gear to the input shaft is loose and almost completely backed off. WTF! Maybe I got lucky, maybe a spent a lot of money on and endless pit. Who knows how far the damage could be. I’ll keep ya posted. Anyone else have a shaft nut loosen up? i am going to call the guy I got it from and see if he will tell me if anyone was inside this thing. Let the fun begin.

The problem is not so much the what and how, it’s the $$$$ that comes with it all. Plans were after putting some miles on it was to replace the EHC and put the upgraded charging system. Now new clutch setup will be needed instead. Just dished 10k to get and all the extra repairs and upgrades make it so much better. Just bitchin. I know I’ll love it once I feel confident in riding it 250 miles in a day without taking out the old tool bag.

Why would you need a “clutch set up”

tighten the nut and go.

That's what thru me off. Now? Someone squeaks clutch, pull derby, push/pull the whole clutch assembly first.

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
Hoping this isn’t cultural appropriation: try to ‘build back better’. Unlike the politicians, we Big Dog Bikers take that phrase VERY seriously. That’s why we stick together and share info/tips on this Forum— you’re in the right place here.
BTW—clutch hub nut—manual says 100 ft lbs with red loctite—the crank (front) pulley spec says 175 ft lbs. I usually add 25 ft lbs to the clutch hub nut and have had no problems.
Remember to clean the threads of old loctite and remove any oil with brake cleaner. Also it’s wise to give it time to set up.

My personal opinion is to Not replace the EHC for preventative purposes. Plenty of time to replace it when and if it fails. Protect it with a fuse or CB between the Battery and EHC just in case your battery shorts out. In a stock bike the EHC and Battery are protected from the VR and Stator with a CB but the EHC is still vulnerable to a shorted Battery.
I agree with Jwooky, torque the nut (left hand thread), adj the clutch and test it out. Total additional cost is a qt of primary oil if you need to go back in to replace the discs.
One more thought. If a person wants to lower the mileage on a bike all they need do is buy a new speedometer and they can set it to whatever number they please as long as it's above the mileage on the title. Years ago I knew people who made a living setting back clocks on cars for used car dealers. No shortage of unscrupulous people out there.
Nvcollins says it best!! Try not to get discouraged. Once you get the bugs fixed you will forget about the bad things and remember why you wanted a big dog in the first place .

Appreciate all of the assistance. still has original DOT tires from 07. I think it is original and guy said nobody was inside the primary. BDM did the carb when purchased and air cleaner and pipes. I am going to clean up the old clutches. They got synthetic trans fluid mixed into the primary since the clutch basket was coming away from the bearing on the input shaft. Figured soak clutches in ATF to clean and then soak in primary fluid for a day before putting back in. Bolt the shit back up with a good amount of red loctite and between 180-200 ft/lbs and let it sit until new primary seal comes in. Worst case I figure is if the clutches are not good enough, can pull it apart again and get a new set of clutches. Between help here and reading up on it, these bikes are not that difficult to work with. Again appreciate the help.

Appreciate it Mike, but she is done a190. Solid, free spinning and soaking clutches to hopefully have wrapped up for Sunday if the old lady doesn’t have me doing too much around the house.

$20 new primary and inspection gasket In hand. Gonna soak the clutches in primary fluid and install tomorrow after work. Probably won’t fire it up until Saturday. Too many young kids by me. Outside of this. Everything looks good inside. Set chain slack per Kaptain’s direction. So all should be good. Ball and ramp checked and looks good. Couple of beers, torque everything in place and Saturday she should scream like a raging bitch.
