Cranks but not running, intermident issue

mine is an 04 so I don't know if it's laid out the same under the seat....I would guess that it is. You will have two harnesses coming off thuderheart ignition box (small silver box under seat). One of the (3 pin) harnesses will have a red, black, and green wire. For me...when bike will crank, but not start I run 12volt to the red wire in this three pin harness and it works to get me from point a to point b. I don't know if this will work for you, but it's worth a shot. My cam sensor is under points cover as well. When I replaced it, it looked fine...was just throwing parts at it to try to fix problem, but it did not. I'm at work now or I would send pics. I've narrowed it down to 12volt out of ehc....I think. I will be installing the crane system like Gasman did once my $$$$ is straight....if that ever happens, lol. Gasman is the shit with all of his pictures, and how too's.

Loose tank liner clogging the petcock screen perhaps....these big motors tend to just die when they don't get enough fuel flow not much stumbling.

You have the old style ehc, make sure all of the connectors are latched to the ehc and that all of the connector pins are locked into the connectors. Take the ehc out of it's little holder and with the bike running, wiggle the wires, specifically the red wire (module and coil power) to connector P4 pin 6 (the fifteen pin connector) and the black wire (module ground) on connector P3 pin7 (the nine pin connector next to the little black relay.

There is a lot of wires under the ehc could be putting a strain on one of them.

Update

I think I may have found the problem. The hardware mounting the coil to the housing was causing one of the contacts to rub on the housing. I replaced one of the 1/4" hex head screws, because i noticed it was missing after the first time the bike died. Well the screw vibrated out again and the coil was rubbing on the housing causing the bike to backfire, studder when I was getting on it this past Sunday.
So I went to Home Depot and got another screw, this time with a lock washer, which I did not have the first time only loctite. So it seemed to fix the backfiring, it's running for now. I still am getting some popping out of the exhuast pipes when I let off the throttle once in a awhile at higher speeds, or when down shifting coming to a stop. It also seems like it is sluggish a little bit. I think I might need to reset the timing, since I removed the sensor to verify it was ok. I tried to place the sensor back to the same location, but who knows maybe off a hair. How do you set the timing and is there a how to for this? The service manual blows for certain details. I just replaced the plugs on the bike. So they should be good to go, but I think I'm running a little rich, due the black color on the older plugs I replaced only with 2500miles on them.

Thanks to everyones suggestions,

Ignition Question

ohio... after my recent phoenix problems... go with the dyna over the crane.
Gasman,
Can you use Compu-Fire on these bikes? My friend was saying they hold up to the heat better here in Arizona then other brands. How hard is it to replace the Thunderheart system? What would be the cost to do this?

Thanks,
Roedog

The thing with ignitions is to make sure you use one that you can take to a dyno guy and he knows how to work with it. But I'm telling you... the dyna is all metal and has to be more resistance to heat.
