08 k9. 2 questions. I'm changing my oil over to full synthetic. What's the best way to get all the old out before putting in new? Is it bad if a little mixes? Also I'm changing my rear tire and wanted to check/repack bearings. How would one go about this? I've never messed with wheel bearings before.

The best thing you can do is search the site for threads that discuss the issues you are wanting to know about. Many on here have posted about bearing and so on.. The is a how to from Raywood on how to repack bearings. There is a thing called an oil scavenge (sold by Mad Dog a member on here) that will help you with steps as to how to remove all the oil that stays in the sump when you drain the tank.

Not a problem changing to synthetic if there is still some reg oil left (there may be up to about a half a quart in the block) after draining tank and changing filter. Next 1 or 2 changes you will be at 100%
I wouldn't suggest draining the block because you may get air in your oil pump. Priming is a bitch, and if not primed properly you will not be pumping oil when you fire up.

After emptying the oil from the oil bag fill the tank with three quarts of the new oil. I then start it up without an oil filter. You will see the dirty oil getting pushed out from the oil filter housing. Once it starts to come out clean shut the motor off and top off the oil tank as needed. Usually about another 1/2 quart to a quart. Same concept as the oil scavenger. As far as the rear bearings dont repack. Change out if needed. For the rear you will need Fafnir 205KDD2. Just my .02. I just got three bearing for about $55 including shipping. Took about 1 week to arrive. Best price I could find. Over 200 million bearings to search from

If you need the 08 manual on PDF I can e-mail it to you.

Thanks for the info. I have a service manual, but its basically toilet paper compared to the clymer manuals of my other bikes. I guess next time I have the tires off ill have somewhere swap out old for new.
