Hey guys took my 04 Ridgeback (107cu SuperG Carb) on a 800 mile trip. Ran beautiful all the way except evey time i hit between 55 and 70 mph it would cough a few times, but only at about that speed. 55 in 5th gear onwards and 65 onwards in 6th gear... any Ideas why.
Cheers Tony

Try a fresh tank of gas. Even a short winter storage can cause gas to go stale or form moisture.

Not trying to be a smartass but I am sure on a 800 mile trip he got new gas a few times. I would suggest dropping your float bowl and cleaning everything .

Hasn't been stored and had many fresh tanks of gas along the trip, also I have a pingle fuel filter installed.

sorry....I missed the trip part, but I was about to suggest checking an inline gas filter. I installed one on my old HD and it never ran right with it. Took the filter off and the bike ran fine.

Still sounds like a fuel issue....just a wild guess.

Do you have a spike air cleaner on your bike? Mine does the same thing. Was told to remove the blow vent screw.

Mine did the exact same thing, but I had a spike cleaner that was mounted horizontal. The fix was to turn it up vertical as seen in the pic of my bike. Another thing that I found was that when it was horizontal, my right knee was covering up the right side of the cleaner, when vertical it was completely unobstructed.

55 in 5th gear you should be in 4th gear max at that speed. Hell my dog never sees 5th gear until I am doing at least 65. 70 and above for 6th gear. If you crack the whip at 55 in 5th gear it is going to shit on you unless you ease into it. I am done :D

My fiend had spike air cleaner and acted just like reaper said, until he turned it upright then it was fine.

It sounds like it happens at the transition point between jets? 2700 - 3000 RPM?

If so, read here in the Forum. It has been discussed maaaany times. If you have an aftermarket aircleaner MAKE SURE your Bowl Vent Plug is removed.

I had that same issue. Then I clean my Airfilter really good and today - no issue whatsoever. However, I have a stock Airfilter (read more flow) that is going on as soon as it's modified to fit the Taz XXX carb that I have on it now with a ice cream cone filter.

Power ratio 107cu to 117cu?. As Earl said I was lugging in 5th gear at 55mph, does that apply to my stock 107cu?

A clip from the owners manual. This may help ya Freewood. The owner manual repeats itself, sorry but it gives you an idea of your gear to tach limits they suggest:
