Continued Protune Question thread in General...

So I wanted to start a new thread in the right place since I kinda hijacked the Protune thread in the general section.

I wanted to give an update in regards to the idling issue and stumbling issue I was having with the dog...

Problem: Bad idling, dropping a cylinder when idling/missing, almost cutting out/choking out off idle only if you whack the throttle too fast, wont lug under 2K very choppy...

So with that said... 2008 K9 EFI - 585 cam, 2-n-2 Big Radius and BCT Baffles, S&S Tuned Induction...

I had posted some video's of it idling and how bad it was, the issue would go away above 2k RPM's, or at least seem like it would go away, throttle response and riding was great above the 2k range..

I was able to get the protune connected, serial connection, read the DTC's, found 2 historical codes, Rear O2 Sensor Malfunction, and Overheat, but nothing current... Reset Adaptive Maps, grabbed some video of the bike idling and connected to the ProTune...

Curtis was helping me try to figure the the bike out and what was going on, pulled the plugs and the rear plug was really bad, Curtis said it was Way Lean and start with looking for an intake leak. In the mix of every, Ground Pounder - AKA Tom - AKA Pops now, after the several intimate (loosely used - HAHA) conversations we've had over the past week... was also helping me with some Protune stuff, which turned into some more technical discussions, which turned into more "let me know what you find" discussions...

So I started with trying to find an intake leak... sprayed carb clean around every spot listen for any changes in the bike, and couldn't detect anything as far as an intake leak... I figured what the heck, let me tear down the throttle body and injectors and check them after hearing about the injectors getting clogged, figured it was an easy sell point to clean and with guidance from Tom, figured might as well do it..

Stripe down the throttle body only to find out that on the backside and inside the intake looked like an oily splattered mess, the throttle body was a complete mess too, figured, well this couldnt be helping anything, so cleaned everything up...

Pulled the injectors, and cleaned those, from my untrained fuel injector ear, it seemed like the rear injector was clogged a little, but little did I know, thanks to Tom, someone had removed the screen filters from the tops of the injectors... So hmmm, why would they do that?? So, this opened up yet another avenue, maybe I should check the gas tank... So off the gas tank came, pulled the fuel pump and sock filter.. Black as tar, so replaced the sock filter, and put it back in...

Get the bike all back together, check the plug wires on the coil side, all looked good, popped them off then back on...

Go to fire the bike... Same shit!! Dropping a cylinder, idling like shit... Im beside myself at this point.. When I did all this, I did not replace the spark plugs, instead, I wanted to see if the problem resolved itself before I put new plugs in it... Well, sure enough, the last thing to do was to put a set of plugs in it... So I pulled the old plugs and dropped the E3's in...

Go to fire it up... Holy crap... its idling perfectly... couldnt believe it.. Old plugs were gapped at .040, didnt really see any signs of a bad plug, but hey, what do I know.... Let it warm up a tad, and crack the throttle a couple times, and the bogging/dying is gone, throttle response is way better.. Happy with the results, called it a night and figured I would take it for a ride the next day...

Sure enough, next night, fire it up, idles great, throttle response is improved, not perfect, but definitely improved, take it out for a spin, and wow... What a difference, bike rides like a new animal. Throttle response off the line is greatly improved, bike doesnt act like it wants to die when to take off from a stop, bike now lugs at 2k and under and doesnt lurch like it doesnt know if its will run or die, overall just a totally different bike...

But heres my deal... Spark Plugs?? Really... I kinda feel dumb, but Im sure all the other maintenance items needed to be done also.. While I do feel there is room for improvement with snapping the throttle and overall throttle response, I will be changing out the plug wires for piece of mind more than anything else, they cheap, why not...

I also captured more video of it idling and watching the Protune since Curtis said I didnt get enough data, so I made sure I video'ed the Protune long enough, I also captured a handful of throttle whacks, again, I think there is definitely room for improvement, but its 90% better than what it was before... Need to figure out that last 10%. I will be pulling the injectors, having them tested and professionally cleaned and screens put back in them, found a place here in AZ, its $18, again, piece of mind knowing the injectors are cleaned, screens in them, and flowing properly...

I do want to give thanks to Curtis for his help and taking the time, although we arent 100% there, Im positive we will... I also want to thank Ground Pounder for all the help and fielding all my telephone calls, we talked enough over the last week, I now call him Pops!! LOL

Here is the recent video I took after cleaning everything and replacing the spark plugs... I'd like to hear thoughts on how responsive the throttle is supposed to be on these since I have nothing to compare it to..

Thanks for the update. Curtis and Tom both will go out of their way to help with a problem.hats off to both of them. Also, sounds like you are getting to know your bike;)
Yes, both have been great and I know Curtis is slammed, just like everyone else... And yes, definitely learning more about the bike thanks to Tom, which is always a plus!!
 
So a couple more updates to come... After cleaning everything, including the IAC, I never reset the sensors, and after some dialogue with KMW, it seems as though the IAC is the next place to concentrate.. Getting a few more things finished up, should be back together in another week, unlocked ECM, IAC, some tuning and we will see where we stand....

Yep! You sometimes it's hard to believe it's something like a spark plug. Most people find it hard to fathom but it's not an item that if it works means it's working properly. I think in 6 or 8 cylinder cars 1 bad plug is not recognized but with only 2 cylinders it sure is!

When I bought my 07k9 it idled rough and the bike had major vibrations. For the life of me I was checking all the motor mounts and wondering why this thing vibrated so much more than my 107 ridgid frame. Well changed the spark plugs (they didnt look fouled) and sure as shit bike ran smoother than silk.

But ended up getting wrapped up in other maintenance, and was happy with the results so far, a sensor reset on the IAC might have been the final ticket, but since it was already torn apart, said screw it, might as well get the unlocked ECM while its torn apart... Hoping we will be back at 100% and then some with the new ECM...

I know some threads go unanswered/unresponded once someone finds issues, so a few people asked that I continue to update the post so other can see what the steps were or issues I found... Once I get everything back in and it fired up, Ill post a conclusion write up...

So got the injectors back from the shop, and even though I cleaned the crap out of them, they still weren't completely clean or flowing to capacity... Injector 1 wasn't too bad but injector 2 which was the rear cylinder needed a little more help... Here's the charting they gave me after the injector service.. $18/ea is what I paid...
