Compression releases

Energy One

I have a 2004 Bigdog chopper with a 107 SS motor. I do not have compression releases in the last 8 years I have gone through 2 starters. I am now on my 3rd Spikes starter. Later BD's came with electronic compression releases. My heads are drilled and tapped from SS so installing electric's will not be a problem. Has anyone drilled the heads and put in mechanicals on the side of the heads or done the after market electricals. I talked to Strokers and the service manager there said a good rule of thumb is anything bigger than 100CC should have releases, it's just to damn tough on starters. Plus the releases are a lot cheaper than a new starter.

I thought all 04's came with electronic compression releases? I know my rigid has it.

I am pretty surewas one of the features of the 04, are yours just not working?

Just checked...it should be there.

All 2004 Big Dog motorcycles come equipped with electronic compression releases to aid in the starting
procedure with the 107 cu.in. engine and the optional 117 cu.in. engine.

Trust me, I purchased the bike in Nov,2004 used with 450 miles on the bike and it never had compression releases. I ordered electrical's today and my mechanic, who use to be a BD dealer said he would hook everything up mechanically & electrically tying them into the starter relay for $350.00.

Put a set in yesterday on a 03 Bulldog, Pulled the tank to keep from having to pull the rocker boxes. Needed to replace the Rear tank mounts anyway.
Hardest part was putting the tank back on, even tho you don't have the releases there was probably a wire from the harness stored for that use.

DON'T try to drill the heads for the push style mechanical releases. There's not enough material to do the job properly. :bang: If the heads are machined for compression releases from S&S, then you can use their electric or mechanical releases.

That's what I did. I just am a big believer in Mechanical over electrical, BUT my mechanic said trust me on this one. Go with the electrical. The heads are already tapped for it, and the electrical will wire right into the starter relay. I said OK. That's why I go to him for repairs. Rule #1 trust in those who work on your bike, If not then go find another mechanic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im at a loss as to why yours did not have it from the factory  That was one of BigDog's BIG enhancements between the 03 and 04's. Its in all their marketing material.

Good luck with the install eitherway!

My 04 has them also. Maybe yours is a early 04? Like a left over 03 or something like that? I to thought all 04's had them.

Yeah, you should of had them. My 03 didn't but the wiring system had the connectors for it so it will be easy for you to put them back in.

I had the electrical version installed on my 03 Chopper; i don't know how many batteries and starters this scoot' has had in the past, but I've never had a problem with either in the 15 months I've had it...probably just jinxed myself...

Mechanic said, he has put them in 2 2004 model's. So I think its what AWG said, "03 left overs sold as 2004 models".
