Imagine that. How did that get there? Don't know if you could tell, but did the shaft look thicker? Flange different?

LINK Back to my pictures you can see where the little knob broke off of the shaft end. Yea, once that little knob wears or breaks off, it's pretty much toast. You can see by the intact CR, that there is not really a whole lot keeping it together. Once it is started up and running, all of the compression would just press agains't it and keep it tight and so it would not need a lot of "strength" to keep it operating - however like you said, if you can machine so extra strength into it - go for it - can't hurt.
