compression releases

I have 30,717 miles on my 07 K9. I was ridiing home from work today and I lost some ccompression and noticed my back compression release was sticking out the top. Is the normal for this many miles and has anyone else had this happen to them?

Yup, it happened to me earlier this season.

Not a big fix, just a replacement of parts, although you do need a special tool to be able to work with the CR's.

ok so a local shop told me that harley davidson makes releases now and he said they might work and they are only around $70 for the pair. anyone know if they will work or not for sure?

Just a thought. What would be the drawback (other than conveinence) to installin maunual relaeases in the top of the heads, (I know I could esily reach them on my ridgeback ) and eliminating a potential or future electrical problem ?

30000 if you think about it per mile that's not to much money... put ss back in and go rideing.. why buy quality and replace with junk!! No offense but in my opinion you don't put volkswagon parts in a corvette.or expect the volks to out performe the vet.so why put inferior parts on a big dog.......... ps I've had my share of hd s and it was cool .so was the sand rail ...?... just sayn

I think S&S make both styles.. electric & manual..I've often wondered why thay use the electric comp release to... some may remember the older bikes with the maginto.. you used to retard the timming before starting.. & high compression drag engines use a control box to retard timming on engines till the engine reaches a set RPM.. then advances timming . for easer starting... it would work on bikes too......no neeed to make things more difficult,, but I didnt design these systems..my bike will be out of warrenty the end of this month... this winter its time to really get to work.......

I got mine from bikers dream... but mine was a warrenty issue...

ok so I got the releases out with the special tool, thank god i have a mechanic for a buddy. Got the pieces on order at 129.00 ea and of course I am going to replace both of them. now the question is when I put them back in is there a special torque for those?

S&S offers manual releases that fit in the exsisting holes.
There's really not enough thickness in the chamber area,to install the other aftermarket (inexpensive)releases.:angry:
I torque the S&S releases at 27 lbs.That area has proud threads,so don't over do it.I don't use thread locker.:up:

by the way I did go with the S&S.....dont know what I was thinking of putting harley ones in,,maybe the cost, damn they are proud of those little suckers!

Damn what's with the failures, they are a simple valve, solenoid operated but still a valve. Had a cable operated release on my 1971 Yamaha 360 installed it in 1974, still on it when I sold it 4 years ago. When you guys remove the release where did it fail? Did it fail on the shaft of the valve? Did the compression push the flange up through the seat and out the top?

mine broke at the shaft and it popped almost all the way out on its own. i reached down and just pulled it out when I noticed it. I did not think these were going to break this easy either but i still would not give the old dog up for anything. my goal is to put a 100,000 miles on her!!

My dogs not going anywhere either. Just seems like these compression releases are a bit thin, at least the shaft. I do all my own work, I like to fabricate my own parts as much as possible, if I have to re engineer things to make them stronger, I do. BTW, my goal is to own one of every model dog.

S&S had issues with the early electric releases.They covered a sh**load under warranty.They were doing what most of you have experienced.:bang:
The replacements had some blue machinists dye on them.
