Compression releases on 2001 Boxer?

Energy One

My bike is 2001 Boxer with 107 S&S engine. Could anybody tell if it's possible to install compression releases on this engine? What is the right way to do it?
Thanks!

The heads would have to be removed to add the 14mm threads for the elec compression releases. S&S can do the machining, if you send them to there service center.

The 14mm threaded heads came out in 2003 Big Dogs with plugs in them.

In 2004 and up Big Dog started using the compression releases on there bikes.

Thanks for the advice pit57, but here in Europe is difficult if I want to send my engine heads to the S&S. That's why I'm looking for some other options. Cheers!

I have an '01 Mastiff. It is an expensive proposition installing electric compression releases on the earlier engines. You can't use manual or you'll be burning your fingers every time you use them. You really don't need them. Get a good battery, battery tender and starter and go the wireplus or other ehc elimination and you'll be fine. Compression releases have their own issues and you really don't need them with a 107. Very few guys have done the releases unless they already needed head work anyway.

Nothing to do with releases but a lot with starting! Lets see, first time my left turn signal bulb burned out on the freeway the bike shut down at 80 and wouldn't start. Any electrical problem anywhere on the system would prevent you from starting it. Elimination of the ehc and converting to dedicated starter wireing means means you do not get stuck at the bar, where you continue to drink and pass out and get rolled by some fat chick who takes your pants and wallet (sorry, I digress) Anywho, instead of throwning bucks at compression releases, a re-wire will pay dividends in the long haul, for a lot less money. Compression releases without re-wire will still set you up for troubles in the future.

I wish I had more money.
Alright. I get it. It's weird for sure. I had an arc that damaged mine one time. My blinkers and breaklights went out but never did quit running. So you didn't do anything to yours to make it go out? What did you end up going with? It's my personal opinion that just because it's called an ehc makes it suspect. The 03's and earlier were basically Harley setups. 03 and earlier :2thumbs: 04 and later  The early ones weren't even bigdog were they?

Maro I have a tp 107. I got the manual comp. release and the tap to install them out of the drag specialties book. any good machine shop can install them. the heads do have to be removed. and they are worth have them installed. I have yet to burn my fingers

OK, here's the deal. If you have a TP I suspect you had the manual releases tapped into the side, by your sparkplugs. This was ok on TP's....different heads. If the guy has a S&S the walls are too thin at that spot. They have to be tapped through the top of the rocker boxes, where you have to sneak your fingers inbetween the bottom of your tank and the top of your engine, which is about an inch on a Boxer or Mastiff...hence my comment about burning your fingers. Check with S&S and they will tell you no can do.

Unless you have a puny little battery, compression releases seem kinda pointless. I don't even use mine anymore after I stuck in a 300 amp battery for my 125hp engine and using a 2kw starter.

Maro, no need for compression release. My 03 started up fine everytime. Just get a good battery and keep it charged.

Thank to all of you guys!
To ''CCRainman'' /nice bike btw!/: I do recharge my battery regularly even it's a brand new one. The problem is that the engines start is not smooth enough as I want. I do suspect that previous owner replaced the original starter with another, but with less Kw.
To ''01Mastiff'': According to you this: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jrpsGw5uok&feature=player_embedded]Machining a Harley-Davidson Twin-Cam Manual Compression Release - YouTube[/ame] won't be a right decision for my bike?
Cheers!

DON'T TRY THIS............
There's NOT enough material in an S&S combustion chamber to do it. :bang:
The Spyke plug/releases are problems also.

Thanks John! A friend of mine has the same problem with his 2006 Pitbul. What can solve that?

Maro, have you looked to see if you have the heads that are already tapped and have a large plug (bolt) where you would install the releases?

It might be a long shot but early on BDM used a lot of different components to manufacture the bikes. My 02' was ready for the releases. I just had to pull the plug and install the releases.

After researching batteries, I got rid of my old Big Boar and got one of them. Spins that 107 over like nobody's business and I have no compression releases. Definately the way to go!

P.S. to "mcgroom": Nope, there's no plug for the releases. :(
