2006 K9, completely dead, need help

New to site and already need your help, glad i joined this site. Bike was running fine until post broke off of battery and bike completely died, Had friend bring battery from his bigdog and after putting it on, bike was still dead, no lights, no gauges, nothing. when you touch the wires to battery, the EHC will flicker one time and go out. touch it 2nd time and lights on EHC is dimmer then nothing, hold reset button in and EHC will flicker and go out. Still dead, any suggestions? By the way this is 2006 K9

are you sure the battery your friend brought you is good?did you hook up all the wires to the battery?are the running lights or headlight working or when you say nothing you mean nothing?

yes, there is nothing, no head lights, no gauges, nothing. he went back and put battery on his bike and lights and all work, wandering if loose post shorted something but figured i would at least get lights to come on when you turn the key but nothing.

Sounds like you might have a short someplace. Is the circuit breaker clicking and then shutting off? That is an '06 k9? Have you looked to make sure the voltage regulator is not under the recall for needing the Maxi Fuse, not the Circuit Breaker? The Volt Regulator has a date on the back side, you need to remove it from the bike in order to see it. If it has an '04 or '05 printed on the back then you will need the Maxi Fuse, or you may need a new Volt Reg. Did the post brake off or melt off? If it melted then you might have a charging issue. I would be checking over the wires at the battery and also checking your grounds.

Post broke off, the bracket where the screw goes into it, snapped off, no burn marks on it.
Circuit breaker is not clicking.
Yes, this is a 2006 K9
Hold in the circuit breaker and still nothing

How did it come to be that the post broke off of the battery? What was the root cause of this?

Was riding down road and all sudden doing 40 mph it died and all went dead. Coasted into parking lot. Pulled seat and saw batteey post was broke where screw holding wires was broken off on pos side. There is no alarm on bike. Touched bracket to remaing post but no lights or nothing. Had friend bring his battery but nothing would come on. He took battery put back on his k9 and battery ok. Tried holding in circuit switch turn on key but nothing

FYI, just bought bike a month ago, only ridden it about 200 miles. Looks like scew on post may been overtightened which may have broken post. Was an everready battery with bracket as post and not solid post. Will try to get some pics of it

are all the wires to that broken post still all together?are you sure one didnt drop down?you will have to replace your battery and when you do dont just touch the post reconnect the wires.keep us posted and good luck.oh some pics migh help

Rickster,

Forget the external breaker to the charging system. :zzdisappointed: That only opens the "charging" circuit pathway if there is a overload condition or a short. And if the breaker trips, then there is no more short to worry about. Only when it "doesn't" trip is there a problem! That's the cause of the switch over to the fuses, some "weren't" tripping! This is a very simple thing to check. Just disconnect the the breaker lead from the battery, if everything starts working, then there is a short somewhere and the breaker is "not" working. If you disconnect it and nothing changes, it's most likely OK, but just leave it disconnected until you find the real source of the problem, then reconnect after the problem is corrected. :2thumbs:
And while the breaker is tripped, disconnected or open, it doesn't affect "any" other parts of the electrical systems when this does happen. That's why it's there! Many here are convinced that the external breaker is some type of overall "MAGICAL RESET" button of the entire electrical system. :loony: Well, it's NOT!:nono:....

BDTech, being certified at level 2 you "should" know better than this.....:zzdisappointed:

It sounds to me from what you're describing, you have either a "very serious" short somewhere. Possibly some wire"s" on the battery reversed accidentally. Carefully check to ensure that this is "NOT" the case.
If not, then the most likely answer is that the EHC went south due to the intermittent battery terminal contact that took place just before the battery terminal broke off completely.
If this is the case, then the EHCs "internal" breaker is what you are seeing tripping out (flash of the LEDs) when you're trying to re-power up the system. The intermittent power being supplied during that time, could have damaged the internal power regulation circuit within the EHC.

Sorry, if I seem to be the barer of the bad news. But I'm hoping for your sake that it's just simply some accidentally crossed wiring at the battery.

Good Luck! :2thumbs:

dead

Wires were still together.
I will be looking at it again this weekend. Will try some of the suggestions, Thanks for all your feedback and yes DeadOne, I hope it is not the EHC, do you have an idea of the cost of the EHC?

Last I heard, they were in the high $400s I think that you'll need BDM # 171-000010-00 for a new EHC.

Good Luck!

I realize the circuit breaker is only used for the charging system:job: that is why I was asking about the voltage regulator being '04 or '05. If it shorted out, we had several short out and even catch fire and it meted the entire wire and even the positive battery post off the battery. I was asking if this was the case. He is now stating it simply broke off, not melted. I never said to push the "magic button" on the side of the circuit breaker. Others have said it in the past and i have corrected them. In fact a lot of others on here were shocked when I told them it is only used for the charging system. The EHC has it's own breakers internally. If you ask me, I think the EHC needs some sort of external fuse or lower amperage breaker so that it is not the weakest link in the system. At $400, it should be protected better, don't you think?
Anyhow, no harm done, just clearing up some confusion:up:
Sometimes we just need more info and even some pictures right from the start.

Insert title here...
IF you need an EHC I'm sure you can find one cheaper than what has been mentioned. Start by asking those members that are removing theirs because of the WirePlus mod or whatever.

Also, I'm wondering... You keep saying that you are holding in the C/B switch? Is it popped all the time? And if it is I'd disconnect the wire from the C/B to the VR then see if the EHC lights up.

You have some troubleshooting to do long before you replace the EHC!

OK, i went this morning and purchased a good Harley battery, charging it now. once charged, i will disconnect the lead going to the C/B and see if EHC lights up. I will also find thread on Voltage Regulator and see if this bike has the recall VR. Still hoping it is not the EHC. Thanks for all your input so far. I think I will learn a lot thru this issue.

Battery is fully charged, connected battery with the C/B lead not connected to the battery, nothing comes on, EHC does not flash.
No Gauges, no headlight, nothing, completely dead.
