Cold Starts - Won't hold idle

Had some issues late last fall. Reset everything this winter, stored at dealer in heated garage. 1st start of the season...no problems.

Brought bike home. My garage is not heated. Been in the 40s/some 30s/50s. Always have it plugged in to the tender.

Cold start this week (48 outside temp), bike won't hold idle. I sallied the clutch to keep the revs high. Rde the bike 20 mins and all issues go away.

Standard issue for folks or perhaps I need some adjustment? Engine thermometer issue?

Guess I'm fine either way.....just would be nice to know if the bike needs 20 mins warm up on colder days.

Thanks!

yeah, when its cold out....it will take the bike a little more to warm up! When I start my bike and its cold out(like in the high 30's or low 40's) I use my cruise mate to lock the throttle so its idling around 1500 rpms or so for a few minutes until the motor is warmed up....after that...it idles fine...then ride

Pretty much me to. Although mine at first would not idle on its own. I had to do some carb adjustments.

I no we all most likely never use the choke or en-richer but it is for cold starts and if working properly will also cause a higher idle for you. you guys may no this but not sure from what was stated.

Since this bike is fuel injected, you shouldn't have to do anything more than turn the key on, push the run button, wait for the check engine light to turn off, and push the start button. Do not touch the throttle. If it will not idle on it's own, it is having an issue. Are you sure that they drained the fuel when it was put into storage, and put fresh in when it was removed from storage? Old gas can still burn, but will run poorly and get better as the bike warms up. Another posibilty is the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor need to be reset. This procedure must be performed anytime the battery has been disconnected or it will not idle correctly:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
2. Wait about a minute, then reconnect it
3. Turn the key on, push run, wait for the check engine light to turn off, then turn the key off
4. Wait at least 15 seconds. Start the bike. Remember to always wait until the check engine light turns off after pushing run before starting.

If it starts and runs fine, and then starts acting up again after several starts, then the IAC motor may need to be replaced.
